The Final Fantasy Thread

Screwing your players out of 100% completion because they didn't know they were supposed to not click anything in a decision box is some hilariously stupid design. What a shitshow of a game.
There's so many things in Final Fantasy games that feel like Square was just fucking with us. I'm genuinely surprised at how many things there are in these games people just seemed to know about. I guess it was mainly just a massive scam to sell strategy guides.

10 and 10-2 were still from the era when strategy guides were big sellers.

They intentionally put shit in there so you would buy the guide. Like 9's guide was famous for not only being useless but being the first instance of needing to tie your shit to an online account to actually make it worthwhile.

I remember the strategy guide for original FFXIII, gave you the license boards for everyone. Really useful when remembering certain bosses unlocked certain parts of a license board for each character. Useful for min-maxing so you could fight Zodiak and Yiazmat (probably butchered both their names).

Never played a 3D Final Fantasy before. I bought IX, X, X-2, and XII on sale. I'm playing XII first under the theory that it has the worst story so I'll enjoy the other games more when I get to them. So far the story is confirming my expectations but will I be disappointed with my other purchases?

I'll still play IX for funny cartoon characters and X-2 for magic bikini sluts. But it'd be nice to get engaged in the story. I can't even remember the bad guy's name when he's on screen and I think there's 2 or maybe 3 of them at this point.

12’s story is good imo. The “main character” blows

Remember the Final Fantasy 9 strategy guide that was half filled with "go to our website for more information"?

Also you could just run FFX-2 twice to get 100% by choosing the two different faction choices halfway through instead of having to do all the extra bullshit.

I got the FF7 remake a couple weeks ago and have been slowly chiseling it. Holy fucking shit is it padded to hell. I mean it should be a long game, but they're literally tapping you on the forehead with valueless time sponging side missions. I just got to the Shinra building finally.

Having it episodic is both a good and terrible idea. Because they're going to milk the fuck out of it until the end of the decade.

Id recommend playing it on easy for the pacing and turning off that ridiculous blurb on the top left that never goes away.

Personally I dig how off the wall the plot gets, but they really should have egone all the way with picking turn based or hack and slash gameplay.

If you're playing on PC, don't forget to install the Moguri mod for FF9, and the Untitled Project X mod for FF10

Play X last (excluding its sequel of course). It'll make the others seem inferior, like they've all been building up to X. They're still great though.

XII is where they went off the rails after the company merger, and never really recovered.

I wouldn't even call it off the rails, just bland. Compared to all the other Squenix projects like Kingdom Hearts and then FF13 it's downright quaint. My big beef with the game is the story and combat are boring. Once Zodiac Age added 4X speed the game turned into a joke.

The story is basically Star Wars. Evil empire needs to be taken down by rebels.

That's pretty much what I meant by off the rails, not necessarily crazy, just it wasn't at all very Final Fantasy-esque. It felt more like they had a license to make an original Star Wars spinoff RPG, lost the license, and said fuck it, modify this shit into a Final Fantasy game.

At the risk of sounding like a fucking plebe, how many of these games are on PC?
