President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

Germany says not yet possible for EU to cut Russian gas

German Finance Minister Christian Lindner said Monday it was not yet possible for the EU to cut Russian gas imports as a sanction against Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, since it would do it more harm than just to Russia.

“We have to cut all economic relationship to Russia, but at the moment, it’s not possible to cut the gas supplies. We need some time,” Lindner said as he arrived for talks with his eurozone counterparts in Luxembourg.

It is common sense to have people who have experience in a field of work they are being assigned to.

Although the UK Government hasn't been doing that as a lot of ministers don't have experience or qualifications for those positions to begin with
It depends really, at the end of the day if you are a good project manager and have a willingness to learn and listen to your experts you can excel in ministerial positions without personal expertise - at the end of the day, you are there to get the best from others as a leader.
They'd be better off sending Penguins (if they have any in stock); those can be truck-mounted, or slung on helos. The problem is the Penguin is very short-ranged (compared to Harpoon), at something like 15 miles.
Truck mounted might be a way forward, problem with helos is that it takes a long time integrate weapons onto new platforms. They wouldn't be able to put them on Ukrainian ones that's for sure.

I've seen pro-Putin shills be all like "what are you a woman, stop being so emotional, it's war, of course people will die" when presented with evidence of civilian death when you can't claim it as fake or false flag anymore, I don't take them seriously because those

There was that tweet about Russian soldiers being shocked at basic amenities in Ukraine and the other thread mocked it because Ukraine isn't a rich country itself. But if anything, it just says things about Russia. I've been to Ukraine, the poor Western part and despite the poverty, all those things described were there. Gas stations were well equipped, you were able to buy things despite all the disrepair. Bumfuck Russian towns are certainly different.
I have all the reasons to believe that Russian soldiers loot everything because it's always been that way, the more things change the more they stay the same. Just like with Red Army as told by grandma who were told by Stalin that the West was full of children dying on the streets, and then seeing vast riches in Germany and elsewhere.
Envy is part of their national identity, and they confuse it with pride. So their method of staying superior to others is dragging them down to their level and then stomping them into the mud.
Ukraine I remember is neat and clean, because they actually care.
Ironically, Russians generally don't regard space outside of their apartment/house as their home and don't mind shitting it up. Every day I pass under the windows where people throw out cigarette butts after finishing smoking, so in the spring as snow retreats there's a harvest of cigarette butts, thousands of them. They litter a lot, very selfish people.

You've thrown me for a loop, at first I thought you meant actual penguins as a joke, but then went to check if there's a weapon with such a name but couldn't find anything.
Well, if all else fails, literal penguins would probably be at least as effective on the battlefield as your average Russian conscript.

You're unlikely to hear something new, but video description has links to subject material, if you're so inclined.

Bonus for muh greenscreen fags:
Pay attention to the expressions on the faces of these men. Zelenskyy also shits on Merkel and other leaders of NATO member countries who prevented Ukraine from joining the alliance, which ultimately resulted in this mess.

My only experience of Russians is from on holiday, all of them are just rude pigs. Now they're probably the rich and self-important snobs who can afford to leave the country - but still, very telling. Didn't like queueing. Horrid folk.

I honestly believe that that's something that communism does to people's way of thinking if they've been under it's influence for too long. Anything outside of one's area of direct control (which is essentially limited to their dwelling) is considered communal, it belongs to everyone and thus, to no one, so nobody gives a shit.

Back when I was way younger, over a decade ago, I used to hang out with some far leftist commie types, they were sorta squatting in some abandoned factory, I remember hanging out in the morning after one of the night booze-a-thons and helping one dude clean shit up, turned out he was one of the founders of the commie squatting thing and he complained to me a lot about how the place is making him lose faith in his values as everyone comes over, shits up the place while enjoying themselves and leaves home for mama's dinner but fucking no one is ever left to help maintain anything or clean shit up, and really, why would they? The place doesn't belong to anyone, far as they know the real owner can come over and seize the property at anytime so why bother.

A culture of "Not my problem" and "State's whatever/whoever will take care of it" or "If the state doesn't fix it, it's not a problem" is very strongly entrenched in post commie states, why care about anything if nothing cares about you? Better and safer to STFU than it is to complain about the cigarette butts littering the streets (or anything else you can't control personally), someone might start saying you're some kind of political activist and you definitely don't want that in those places.

Edit: Take this video about China's "Not my problem" culture for example. I imagine it's very similar in Russia.

UK will probably send Harpoons, they are set to phase them out soon so why not. The problem is that the UK don't have any land launch systems for those missiles. If they can find a launch system then the UK will provide them I have no doubt.

Comments from the UK suggest that they are actively trying to source those systems from other NATO members. For instance, Denmark has them. In fact, I believe Boris Johnson had described the UKs efforts as like an Amazon Prime for Ukraine in terms of coordinating the sourcing and delivery of these systems. - they ask, and if it's possible they get delivered to their door.

Plus, the Harpoons achieving their designed aims in sinking Russian ships is better than decommissioning them.
Oh, if they're getting land launch systems from Denmark then yeah, they'll be sending them. But they aren't going to send them as is right now is sort of my point.

Norway is likely to provide Penguins or NSM's at this rate. The Penguin is perfectly fine for killing marauding Russian patrol vessels and coast guard cutters, it'll absolutely rip them apart.

Nothing I've seen from Russian hardware performance indicates it's anything but 2nd or 3rd rate junk, so yes, I would assume so.

The Penguin can, IIRC, also be used against stationary land targets (although it is a waste of its capabilities).

If they're using it against land targets it'd be high value stuff and very close range attacks. The Penguin also doesn't have a very large warhead (120kg) or much in the way of terminal maneuver or speed. Most likely it'll be a great deterrent for any naval landing or patrol boat looking to move in close and start shelling, which is already an advantage.

I see the same mentality in China, but not in US colonies where many towns have "commons" i.e. common area upkept by all. Also in Ukraine a lot of smaller towns that got fed up with shitty roads and luck of budget, outright chipped in as a town and rebuilt their roads. Common is not always "not mine", I think that's just mentality and Russia has always been more Asian in its mentality than European /Western.

some of these Russian propaganda vids are lolcow treasures:

Film crew goes ahead of sapper on a "minefield" while he is sweeping for mines:

Dude was a former army captain too
If there's anything the shitshow in the USA's upper ranks has taught me, its that generals need to be kept far, far away from any serious decision making thanks to how politicized the flag ranks are. Thank God he was just a captain, and as such probably has a brain still instead of a skull filled with political mush.

As to the tungsten darts in Starstreak, its so it can double as an AT weapon with those flechettes.

It's useless, they will continue to live in their make-believe world of muh based Russia, they already made up their minds and are unlikely to change. All of their supposedly healthy skepticism somehow disappears when it comes to consuming Russian propaganda.
They wouldn't know what to do if they were trapped for a year (or two like it was before) with gopniks, navigating prison rules to save their own skin from a similar fate, and I really don't wish it on anyone.

Rape is perhaps the worst of it, if you consider it preferable to murder, but abuse is certainly not limited to it. There's no end to the creativity of bored low-IQ slavs when it comes to making someone else's life miserable.

You are missing there is two group, 1 is in Denial but you are ignoring us in the 2. group, Yeah Russia is commiting atrocitites and acting like scumbags, Unfortunately for Ukraine, Putin is definitely funding Far Right for his own purposes, and Far right is needed to fight Globohomo shit. Ukraine has by no fault ended up on Globohomo side, Sorry Ukies nothing personal, not your fault but world isnt fair.

You do know that majority of Russian oligarchs fled to Israel which still doesn't condemn Russia? You know that country that everyone is so convinced is the dead center of the globohomo shit being funded? Has it crossed your mind that what Putin is doing is playing right into the globohomo shit?

If you want to simp for anti-globohomo then simp for fundamentalist muslim states, there being anti globohomo is explicit, it's codified in law and religion, in Russia it's all just buzzword salad prepared exactly for people like you because beyond propaganda, Russia is a shithole where all the shit western right wingers complain about also happens, it's just kept on the down low, under the surface, like it used to in the west, not explicitly illegal, not explicitly condemned, it's just not talked about.

Fucking Taliban is closer to providing what you people are asking for than Russia, they also get a bonus for humiliating America directly.

Hell even Putin himself said he doesn't mind the LGBT Russians, just as long as they support his side in one of his shizo rants about traitors.

What makes you think im against Taliban ? Russia is shit the problem is its still more usefull to Anti Globohomo than Ukraine. To me this isnt about Fanaticism or URAAA, to me its that retarded Ruskies are more usefull to me than Ukrainians, in normal world id be cheering on Ukraine, but this isnt normal world.

You're a bored housewife, and nothing will convince me otherwise. Instead of going on with your life, you're hemming and hawing about "globohomo" and geopolitics.

Define "globohomo" for me.
