Because like the Winter War, even a valiant and heroic effort to resist Russia was defeated by an absolutely inept and suicidal campaign and they still lost a chunk of their best land. Their resources if they decide to go balls-to-the-wall are essentially limitless and they don't care how many of their people die.

Its fucking Eastern European warfare, both sides are more akin to orcs than human. The Ukranian orcs rape, steal and set the civilians up to get destroyed by firing on Russian units from the 6th floor of an 8 story commie bloc then make a video about how Russians are blowing up civilian structures for the western media. Russian orcs get sniped at and fired upon from every direction and get so trigger happy they shoot random people crossing the road with their bike the moment the person is visible. The woman you're talking about was found in the basement of a building Azov was using as a barracks, the specific war reporter was uh Patrick Lance and he was following DPR troops around. There is way too many fucking paramilitary organizations around to keep this war nice and orderly, this shit happened in Iraq, Syria, Yugoslavia and everywhere else you have non-state forces fighting, there is only tepid and inconsistent adherence to Geneva.

No one thinks it's a good thing if anything it's the antithesis of the human condition. Unless we're surrounded by danger we die in sterility. It's a simple fact of life when life is cheaper people have more kids and continue on. When life is nicer and more costly people say I can't have kids the economy and my needs come first.
