Fat Acceptance Movement / Fat Girlcows

Guess I won't be needing that New Year's resolution to tone myself up, then...

I think what I fucking hate most about that is how sexist it is, especially coming from a supposed throne of social justice. Why should it be assumed that a woman is making healthy choices so that she can be more attractive to a man?

Plus, psychologists who've studied it have pretty much proven that improved health by way of losing weight leads to better self-esteem and increased level of activity, including leisure, when it's not a chore to get out of bed, everything in life just feels better... for a movement so tied up in the fee-fees, it's amazing the FAs want to not only feel bad, but KEEP feeling bad....

Of course they want to keep feeling bad. Deep down, they want the world to be oppressing them. Because if that wasn’t the case, then they might have to confront the horrible truth that they are doing this to themselves. They are so consumed with self-loathing, insecurity, and adolescent angst that they feel the need to wave it like a flag; to announce to the world what unworthy people they are. Seeing oppression in their day-to-day lives confirms this self-destructive belief, so they seek it out until they find it. And they do, in the most absurd of places. Likewise, they react violently to even the slightest suggestion that this might not be the way the world works. Because if it wasn’t, then they would have to confront this awful truth about themselves; that they are making an unconscious choice to be fat, unhappy, perpetual victims.

If some stupid bitch gave me a hug and told me I didn't have to lose weight to be beautiful for a man, I'd haul off and punch her. And then I'd fat shame her. And then I'd punch her again.

True, nobody should have to do anything under penalty of being abused if they don't.... but, it's not abuse to be told you are fat if you are, well, fat. Not polite, perhaps, given context, but it's not abuse.

Well, depends on the context. If you're a parent constantly telling your kid that they're too fat, or a spouse always doing that, then I'd call that abuse. To a stranger? No.

I was watching something on, I think it was TLC, and the mom had some serious issues with her weight, which she was projecting onto her daughter. The girl was fairly slim, but her mother was constantly weighing her, harassing her about what she ate, calling her at lunch to find out what she was eating, etc. Once when she called a friend's house and found out that they had gone out for pizza, she went ballistic. The woman was insane.

That's kinda what I was getting at, walking up to a stranger and saying "Wow, did you walk the dog or EAT it you cow?!" That's abusive. Giving a kid a complex by calling them fat every time you see them? That's abusive.

Telling a fat person they're seriously endangering their health, in the context of being their physician? That's not abuse, no matter how it hurts your feelings.

Exactly. Your doctor isn't there to tell you what you want to hear. I mean, you don't think it's abusive if your dentist tells you to brush your teeth, that it's "bad teeth shaming" or whatever.

Actually tumblr has complained about that too, that it's racist to think "white" teeth are good.

Oh sweet Jesus, seriously? Then again, you had some dude bitching about "black holes" and "devil's food cake".

Anyone else think there's a parallel between obesity in the West and HIV/AIDS in Third World countries? They're both obtained through certain "risky" behaviors, people who have them are both stigmatized in mainstream society, and cultures where they're prevalent often try to throw them under the rug or claim a lack of responsibility for them. Is there an HIV/AIDS acceptance movement somewhere on tumblr too?
