Regarding your experience.... I don't think it was until fairly recent in human history, that warfighters became expected to turn off & rejoin humanity once the war ended, and PTSD became a disease to be treated. We were simply expected to either fight the next war or become alcoholics in lieu of; and even the citizen-soldiers of Rome were still a caste apart.
War isn't a mental illness. Though caused by insanity it's entirely natural, and so is the reaction to it. I'm sorry your pops couldn't go easy, but your friend was also right. And a little of that understanding helps a lot more than any PTSD treatment.
