It's just sad. Like you mentioned, Ethan has no self awareness whatsoever to realize that his brand of "edgy" humour has no space is the little bubble of the internet that he carved out for himself. And it's entirely his fault. When people rightfully call out his bullshit, the mental gymnastics (and denial) put on display would put even the most testosterone filled trans athlete competing in a female highschool sports competition to shame.

Whenever Ethan has his whatever subpar hot take, you can't even get mad at him. Personally the feeling I have is a mixture of cringe, disgust, and pity. It's just sad to see what he has become desperately clinging on to whatever trendy topic he can milk.

Like you said at the end, whatever he has coming is entirely self inflicted. He also can't pretend like there was no warning whatsoever. People who use to like him in good faith warned him and he decided to not only just ignore that advice, but also gaslight them.

He does not do live reactions very well. I imagine this will happen again in the not-too-distant future, but maybe he'll accidentally attack an even more sacred cow than gays. Maybe he'll say something about black people in the ghetto or brown people living in shantytowns in the third world.

The whole live reaction thing is a sign of his failure, anyways. The best streamers (in my limited experience) only rarely rely on their chat to push content, because they can be engaging on their own. Bad streamers use their chat as a crutch to make content because they're unable to be engaging otherwise. Ethan turning to live show segments and relying to such a degree on his chat is a sign that he can't come up with engaging content anymore, even despite having a studio that's way too large for no discernible reason.

Ethan Klein is basically a more weird version of Jimmy Kimmel without the huge amount of Hollywood-based writers coming up with his jokes. Sure, people can say that Kimmel is a hack who currently thrives on making TDS popular and mocking Republican and Middle America voters as if it’s still the Obama years, but he at least has been known to conduct interviews with people he regularly mocks (while pretending to be in the middle):

I'll admit, DeFranco and Ethan had that in common: an attempt to seem like your average joe who is trying to give you some content to amuse you as you go about your day. DeFranco admittedly had me amused up until he ended the Semi-daily vlogs he had Joe Nation do, and then that's when the mask started to slip for me, and then promptly fell off when DeFranco threatened to stop doing his daily news if Trump won.

Ethan for me began to slip when he started the podcast, and the OG content died off in the process, then the depressionposting, and sudden WACKY MOBILE GAME WHERE I'M A BALL, followed by his "hey I gotta make a living too" video. Like you said, DeFranco was more subtle, whereas Ethan lacks that, and, in some respects, like Ralph, is blunt and to the point at face value, but is snaking about while you're not looking.
