Between Azov and other state sanctioned militias shooting at their own people for taking shelter and the government rounding up all men ages 18-50 to die in a ditch this is just depressing. I never thought I would witness the Volksturm and militarized Hiter Youth in my lifetime.

Sure. I should also add that I do believe the officers prevented individual surrenders. As they should. Individual surrender is cowardice before the enemy. Even the United States carries the death penalty by field court Marshall for this. The UCMJ allows an American Field Grade Officer to carry out the summary imposition of sentence for it too. Literally take your ass out back and get shot. So of course Ukraine does (and probably did) too.

Fortunately it's a very rare situation where such measures are required. No US units have ever been surrounded in siege conditions in quite some time.

Yes, it sounds reasonable as long as you have a commander and a plan of action for soldiers who would otherwise prefer to surrender. But what we have now are soldiers who were left without ammunition and who were abandoned by their commanders, as the soldiers themselves say.
