Can you realistically create a popular counter-narrative to encouraging rushed transition when you decided to do it to yourself? No one held you down and crafted a stump dick or chemically castrated you. And at what point is enough questioning enough? Regret is always a possibility even after rigorous evaluation. Most detransitioners ignore all warnings and then claim they weren't stopped, and it's everyone else's fault. That's inherently unsympathetic - the detrans plight is, unfortunately, just overwhelmingly whiny and unappealing, because it is ultimately their fault. The only people you can consistently reserve pity for are children and the mentally ill, and neither group are likely to contain many candidates for representing detransers. Keira Bell for example was around 16 (I think) when she was allowed to troon out, and a lot of people felt no sympathy for her at all, even vitriol. (And to make this more relevant to the thread topic, lots of these women say they don't regret chopping off their breasts etc. Even less sympathy to be garnered when you're saying your surgery results don't even bother you at all and you even like them. Will the average person really be receptive to these broke-brain mental gymnastics?)

And don't get me wrong, I'm all for encouraging people to not troon out and to address the underlying issues making them want to. But those who made that decision and walk it back are a tricky case. Barring a rare few examples, people aren't that willing to understand such a thing and I don't know if they can or will make much difference, especially the Cluster B ones who traded obsessing over gender as trannies, to.....well, obsessing over gender as detransitioners.

a stent is for an anatomical structure that usually remains open on its own, but something has gone wrong to cause an obstruction . since it is normally supposed to be open you can be sure of when it is in the correct position and you don't actually need a lot of force to do so.

the neovagina isn't a natural structure, it is a normal structure inverted into an abnormal cavity in the pelvis. its more akin to what happens when you get a piercing, which has to get held open during healing or it will very quickly close in on itself. If you use something hollow and flimsy (like stents usually are) your piercing would crush it or it could become embedded in the healing tissue. you have to use something adequately rigid to avoid some kind of enmeshment or collapse.

i have also tried to think of ways they could improve on dilation but can't come up with anything that wouldn't be worse or more dangerous than what is already advised. Anything that is left in there has the potential to become trapped, so it has to be insert/remove and it has to be something hard enough to make it expand. the only other thing I could come up with is some kind of inflatable device that you fill with increasing volumes of water but that could cause pretty severe injury if things are stretched too far. I genuinely think it is just a bad surgery. It might be acceptable as the absolute last resort, with a LOT of prep ahead of time for what the reality entails, but it is handed out like candy to anyone who wants it right now and sold as a solution to life's problems.
