President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

What? Zelensky and his cabinet are the ones saying they won't recognize Crimea or any territory as non-Ukrainian. I do agree the win conditions are not the same but I also don't think Putin really cares what the West or US have for win conditions.
Putin's feelings don't change the fact that the West's opinion on the matter makes a difference now. It's why it's so astoundingly fucking retarded for Putin to have escalated the fight the way he did.

The US and the west are now invested in Ukraine as they are pumping in weapons and supplies. Over time the supply chains will likely become even more stream lined to help those in Ukraine fighting. The only way those supplies/weapons stop going into Ukraine is if it suddenly looked futile or Ukraine simply gave up, which is why it matters what the West considers their own "win conditions" as Russia will be forced to face forces armed by the US and NATO until the West views the fight as over.

Putin will never satisfy the US unless he commits suicide and is willing to have Russians die as much as the US is willing to have Ukrainians die. Don't think he cares that much.

>Rouble is strong
Rouble has developed blackmarket exchange rate 300% higher than the official one
yeah this is one of those lies that appear valid at first glance because the exchange rate has indeed recovered from the initial drop
but it doesn't tell the real story, which is that russia has implemented capital controls and heavily limits peoples ability to sell rubel for foreign currency. trade volume has dropped to near zero as a result, making the exchange rate near meaningless
ruble.png

they did a similar thing with their domestic stock market, where peoples ability to sell stocks has been severely limited in order to prevent stock value from dropping

I'm not sure what you're going on about at this point.

It's like you're imagining it's irrelevant that the West feels a need to pump in weapons and supplies to Ukraine to the point where they're a match for Russia because? What? What even is this you're on about?

I'm saying I don't think what the West considers victory matters to Putin and he will just do what he does and declare victory even if lead is still flying and blood is still being shed, which is almost certain.
The blood didn't stop flowing in Chechnya after victory was declared, not for years.

“If it were Russian soldiers doing this with Ukrainian mothers, we might say, ‘Oh, my God, that’s barbaric,’ ” she said. “And is it actually working? Or is it making them say: ‘Look at these lawless, cruel Ukrainians, doing this to our boys?’ ”

just wanted to say that Russian DID do that in 2014 and still doing it in various forms trying to encourage civilians dissent at losses and give up

In related news, it does work. Remember that dude on VK stating that Ukraine was country 404 and now looking for his conscript son on Moscow

... well first, his posts got removed yesterady

... but today he is getting more traction
Three more families from Yalta, Alupka and St. Peterburg have contacted us, with kids who are also MIA, also conscripts

Today we wrote to the local military commisariate and tomorrow this will be posted to Simpheropol commissariate

We need a response in writing about location of our kids instead of SMS with pictures and messages to pray ... Here everyone responded to our sorrow, we are greatful

... and just like that mighty RF forces going out for washing machines and raping are turning into poor "kids", lost on maneuvers. Take a guess with one try if they are going to 9th May celebration and keep posting bullshit that their neighbor countries are Russian who forgot their identity.

Also Google sat views is now NOT blocking anything on RF, so you can get decent res pics of all the strategic and military objects ... like Russia's only remaining career Kuzya:

Kuzya has rusted since the last time he tried to kill itself

The article quote you referenced has nothing to do with what you're talking about? No one took a pic of the dead kid and sent it to the family? Isn't this all about Moskva sailors who Russia seems to be lying about all having survived yet many are "MIA"?

I combined three topics in one post due to forum rules about double-tripleposting, three different stories. First paragraph was referencing your article few pages back.

Lots of presents and boobie traps left from liberators who totally not trying to fuck up civilians. Over the weekend some kid got blown up, not the first, not the last. I get mining bridges during a retreat, but this petty shit is tiresome

I get the rationale if you are retreating and expecting enemy soldiers to occupy civ dwellings after you leave, but in these cases, military isn't going there, it will be civs coming back to their apartments and houses. Why do this?

So does the Western news media.

lol, not even close. Western media lie and pretty much anyone can lie.

Russian propaganda machine lie from the top, propagate lies through their state media mouthpieces, outlaw dissenting views and kills/imprisons any opposition.

Who is taking these pictures?

And regarding the article in question you said
"In related news, it does work. Remember that dude on VK stating that Ukraine was country 404 and now looking for his conscript son on Moscow"
I read that as carrying on from saying sending pictures of corpses to their family does work because it led to the people making a fuss about their "missing" kids and wanting an official response, which is sorta a completely different thing.

I think it is fucked up to send pics of dead people to loved ones and then mock them and think if Russia was doing that right now it'd have had articles written about it before the Clearview AI article was written. That said it wouldn't surprise me if Clearview AI also worked with Russia so they could "identify Nazis" or whatever cooked up justification Russia may have. Clearview is just a straight up evil company.

Absolutely even close, I don't live in either of the two countries at issue so I don't really give a fuck about who's a worse liar for them; I only have my own experience of being lied to every second of every day by the Western news media, and on this issue in only one direction.

Ah sweet liberation from groomer. Better death than degeneracy.
You could just do a flip right now if it bothers you so much now that you've come face to face with a solution.

Because they can, because those faggots piss and shit themselves whenever they come in contact with an enemy combatant so they take their rage out on civilians. russian armed forces are a bunch of fucking primitive, retarded animals, not soldiers. Even their COs think there's more value in them serving some gay oligarch as a bitch than doing anything else.

Nah that would be just letting your kind win, id prefer to atleast take wife or child of some scum like you at very least. I do hope Putin burns as much of Ukrainian farmland as possible, The Migration and starvation that would result would either result in Europe adopting Ruthless Europe first policy with turn away from globohomo and progressivism or in Europe dying and replaced by Scumbags who nonetheless properly hate this progressive taint.

So does the Western news media.
The west has independent journalism, not sponsored by the government, and even journalism that is nominally government-sponsored (such as PBS or NPR) doesn't operate with someone from the government sitting in the office telling the anchors what to say. And even if mainstream journalism breaks down, there are various outlets up to and including blogs on the left and the right from dedicated citizens who go to shit like the school board and the water board and tell people what's going on. Are there occasional hiccups? Of course. Are some things printed that later turn out to be bullshit? Yes.

But this is like the Biblical mote and beam.

Russia has one kind of journalism: government-sponsored. Google "Russia journalism" and on the front page there are articles from the Wilson Center, Amnesty International, NBC News, and The New Yorker about how journalists have been forcibly silenced in Russia since this shit began.

It's like someone upthread said: We think these people have access to the information that what used to be called the "Free World" enjoys, but they do not. You and I know more about what's happening there on (what is for me) the far side of the world than the average Russian knows about what's happening in the next country over.

These fuckers don't understand flush toilets, but you assume they're getting fair and balanced reporting?

they don't need to have govt agents in the office because the guy who actually runs the office is a guy who was appointed to his post by the government, so he will ensure that all his underlings will tow the party line on all major issues, that only those with the right opinions get hired in the first place. the staff and management of privately owned media outlets are also closely intertwined with the political class.

western media is a lot more nuanced and subtle about their propaganda, they don't usually publish blatant and crude in-your-face lies like the russians do, but make no mistake, in terms of dishonesty and manipulativeness they are no less devious and malicious than the russians are.

like, for example, russian style news about george floyd chimpouts would have been like "today nothing happened in minneapolis, especially no riots, everything is calm and normal"
meanwhile western style news about it was all "there are peaceful protests and demonstrations for racial justice, here's our top 10 list of reasons for why this is a great thing!"

not a blatant and obvious lie, but still nothing close to honest or objective reporting, propaganda all the same.

There is no such thing as Free and Independent media, western media may jot be government owned but it is 90% corporate owned and a lot of those corporations have dealings with the government or very serious biases.

Yes it's far worse in russia than in the west because there and in China you literally only have one narrative, in the west there are still a few counter narrative sources but even the west is working overtime to erase all that.

Let's stop pretending the west is a paragon of freedom and morality just because russia is so much worse, let's instead start thinking and working towards making sure the west doesn't become russia but "For the right reasons and causes" which I sometimes feel it's slipping into.
