Russia has started this offensive too soon. It's relying on formations made up of soldiers who just got their asses kicked around Kiev and have been thrown into ad hoc units to augment forces who have been bogged down in the east for nearly two months. Meanwhile mariople is still not entirely secure which is keeping forces tied down in the south.

Russia needed to give the soldiers who lost the Battles of Kiev and Cherniyev a good Month to recover from that ass kicking. If only to reinforce and train up the fucking new guys. They also needed mariople secure entirely so they could turn their attention to the front.

It seems to me that at least a partial rotation of troops has been carried out, it is not so difficult to replace 40,000 tired soldiers when you have about 600,000 in reserve

Are they sending in completely new troops or just rearranging them by sending the troops who were in the north 3 weeks ago to the south? Russia had sent in all of the 170-190k people it had lined up for the invasion within the first 3 weeks.

What do you think the troops were doing after russian military around Kiev left? Vanished into the void? Russia was literally doing rotation the past few weeks.

From the very beginning is was obvious this would be long and brutal.
This time it's a real war, not whatever small-time bullshit Russia was doing through separatist proxies in 2014.

Also, harvest season is here, and there's no fuel for agriculture, and the most fertile soil in Ukraine is in the south, where the war is, a lot of it Russia-controlled already.
Soon Ukraine will have to start worrying about NATO sending them food, not weapons, so the country does not starve.
The famine has not even began.

There are two outcomes:
1) Russia wins with military offensive
2) The war keeps going indefinitely. And Ukraine has no chance to win the attrition war

Putin doesn't have a month. He has to have this mostly wrapped up, or at least showing something he can claim as Victory! by May 9th. "Victory Day". He's already got the T-14 Parade Floats all polished up. Granted these may be the only tanks he has left capable of moving under their own power.

Letting an inferior force hand you your ass because you failed to concentrate tactically is the root of every upset in military history. The fact that the Russian Army allowed it to happen is very unsatisfying.

Now they are making ANOTHER mistake. Launching an adhoc offensive to try and recover from the prior defeat. This entire Donbas offensive seems rushed. And this time they aren't crashing into territorial guard forces desperately thrown together on the fly. The Ukrainian forces in the Donbas are their regular army units. The best trained, and with access to all the toys.

They needed to take a month, wait for the spring rains to stop turning the Steppe into mud, and allow their units to get properly organized for the offensive. Instead they are going leeroy Jenkins because Putin wants this wrapped up by May.

It's not going to work.

I hate to break it to you, but the Ukrainians in the Donbas have been fighting there throughout the invasion and unable to get properly resupplied, reinforced, or relieved. They're not exactly in a good spot right now.

They're not going to win.

That is something that is sometimes done, but I don't really see any evidence of that happening here. I think now that Mariupol is mostly taken and there are fresh troops in, Russia is going to start looking to either close the encirclement in Donbass, or they're going to try to take more territory elsewhere.
