If you want a book that’s grim but also great, I recommend A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara. I try not to know much about books or films before I get into them, and that policy served me well with this one. If I’d known, I’d never have read it, but I’m so glad I did.

It's a book that takes a real toll on the reader. Set in the American Southwest in 1849, it's been classified as a noir anti-Western.
An utterly devastating novel, it unblinkingly flips the switch of just about every "trigger warning" conceivable. It takes the one on a desperately bleak journey. The reader rides along as a witness to the casually committed war crimes born of manifest destiny in the Wild, "Wildest" West as seen through the eyes of a runaway from Tennessee.
The narrator, only known as "the Kid," becomes a "child warrior" drafted off the dusty streets of Nacogdoches, Texas into the Glanton Clan (a real outlaw gang that worked both sides of the law) as an Apache hunter.
It's a rather long and, probably for many, an emotionally taxing read that's best taken in small doses.
But it's rocketed to the top of my list of greatest books ever written.

Shes definitely not booted because she was making tiktoks while away from Facebook at Darnells with him and his sister/nephews. I recommend the Road or Outer Dark. I thought they were both great! Blood Meridian is also good but it is pretty long with some drawn out parts but would also recommend.

Oh can I contribute to the Kiwi Farms book club? "Brother" by Ania Ahlborn. Backwoods mountain family of serial killers who have the most complicated relationship in all of fiction. The book is very graphic, but it's done for a point not just mindless gore. It has some amazing, heart breaking twists in it that I guarantee you won't see coming. The ending left me feeling hollow for days. Ahlborn is similar to McCarthy but more......... digestible I guess. Definitely give it a go.

Honestly, the ignorance in people like Kim and Sammie aren't a shock to me. The variety of hick that seems okay living in filth and utter poverty and going in and out of jail isn't a shock. What kind of freaks me out is how deeply unhealthy they all are. Sammie has a heart condition and diabetes, Kim has diabetes and claims to have had a heart attack, and they're in their 20s. They're ALL crazy and on psych meds and bounce in and out of psych wards and hospitals. All the babies in the Sammieverse were born early or with horrific health issues, if they're born at all. All these women have had multiple miscarriages, to the point they're pretty desensitized to them. It's not normal. I know people like to go 'lol Arkansas' but this isn't normal, even for here. I really don't understand it. It's like if you took a colony of shitty stray dogs and let them inbreed for several generations. You get this genetic trash that turns to goo by 30.
It’s not an Arkansas thing, it’s a trash thing — and it knows no racial or ethnic boundaries. If you consume vast quantities of sugar, HFCS and fat every day of your life and never get any exercise, it’s going to catch up with you sooner or later. The only ones who are somewhat svelte are the meth addicts like Dalton.
