President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

I'm sure those are definitely, totally not rebranded Harops from Israel with "Made in America" scribbled over the nameplates.
But if they're true ghost-drones, that means no serial #s and the ability to be 3D printed by autists & redditors alike. Terrifying!

It’s possible but it’s equally likely the DoD got feedback on what the Ukrainians needed and modified an in development product to suit the needs

I believe at current level of mobilization, any med degree from college makes you a second lieutenant. There has been a number of dudes trying to cross the border in fem attire, so basically any one of them could be in service. I'm actually surprised how long it took for the first troon to show up. Fake tits or weiner, hopefully some good work comes out of it.

I bet Pentagon is in overdrive right now analyzing all the feedback pouring back.

Also, this, not sure how related, RF NII-2 of defense, huuuuge fire in Tver. This institute works on developing all kinds of navigational solutions for all kind of rockets and missiles/ICBMs in Russia.

Fire is a great way to cover something up. Russians say it's electrical short somewhere ... but hey, at least they are not using the same lit cig excuse, props for being creative.

hell of an electric fire, it's like no one bothered to fight the fire, several buildings, so far 7 dead, 26 wounded. This is where Iscander short range ballistic missiles were developed.

I don't know how common it is for mice to live in fucking helicopters. They do in cars. It kind of looks like a hamster actually, I don't see the long tail and body seems too stocky. Another casualty of war.

The press have always been, to quote Hunter S. Thompson "A gang of cruel faggots", they've never been on the side of the little guy no matter how much they try to portray themselves.
Hunter S. Thompson embodied the worst qualities of the contemporary press.
all americans need to do is crater moscow and st petersburg.
Imagine the amount of historical and cultural artifacts that would be lost if something like that happened. Hopefully nothing like that will occur during this conflict.

18th of April, x-VP of Gasprom Bank, in what appears a weird murder suicide, shoots his teen daughter, his wife and himself:

Today (21), in Spain, top manager of the largest gas company Sergey Protosenya have committed the same act shooting dead his daughter, his wife and himself.

this dude is worth about 400'000'000 Euro and typically lives in France, but traveled to Spain for Easter festivities (Orthodox Easter is this weekend) ... where he suddenly decided to kill himself and his family.

What the fuck is that about? I can't get my head around why that is a thing?
Also the steelworks there must be a way to arrange food drops.
If they do try and starve them out or use chemical weapons that is just pure evil.
How the fuck does Poo-Tin sleep at night?

Biggest Chemical Plant in russia also burned down today.

Wtf is going on over there?

This was posted yesterday on few pro-ukrainian telegram channels, but today a bunch of russian newspapers picking it up and pass on reaction from the russian side.

https://www.mk.ru/politics/2022/04/21/boris-dzhonson-prigrozil-rossii-yadernym-oruzhiem.html
I have not been able to find this statement from Boris Johnson in English, but it looks like both pro-Ukrainian and Russian sides talking about it (Moscow Komsomolets is a big rag)

Basically Boris Johnson is quoted to say this:

If Russia would use weapons of mass destruction, UK reserves the right to reciprocate with limited nuclear strike back against Russia.

This is has been talked by high level analysts in US, essentially saying that if Russia uses tactical nukes in EU, they can reciprocate with similar, small scale tactical strikes against limited strategic targets ... like bunkers and command posts. So we are talking about nuclear war light, not total world annihilation. This is getting talked about more and more as a limited counter action. Before, use of nukes was limited to total war or nothing, now scenarios with limited strikes are on the table.

Essentially this makes Russia's threat to use nukes somewhat less potent, because it's not total destruction (shit I don't think there is enough nukes to level the whole of Russia), just getting enough nuclear isotopes in the air to turn EU into X-men.
I've not heard anything about this, which makes me doubtful, but it's an interesting piece. Even during the cold war the Soviets recognised the threat of both the British and French having their own nuclear arsenals. That's why even though a lot of their plans involved nuking the shit out of Germany and other places prior to assault, and even though Britain and France would be both important contributors and staging grounds, the Soviets never planned to nuke either. Given a lot of people seem to think that this entire thing is Putin living out his reivive-the-USSR larp, I wonder if he's smart enough to remember this?
