I don't think Jack had any change in heart. Personally I like to lean towards the idea that nothing will fundamentally change when "muh world is ending" shit happens online - people (especially Twitter users...) love getting all "righteously" riled up and giving themselves pats on the back until it's not emotionally impactful no more and they aren't getting the updoots/attention/whoring they deserve. Honestly if Elon does anything besides jerk himself off about being rich and owning useless bullshit, I'll be really surprised (although regardless of what happens - the reactions people are having will be funny for a long while).

You can just use a throwaway google voice number. I've only ever had twitter ask me for a number on a brand new account. Once the account is established, it doesn't seem to ask for phone verification anymore. That's my experience anyways.
