This is a common misconception.The problem is with this energy source. Nuclear produces constant amount of energy, so when demand changes you can't really increase or decrease to fill it
Yes, it’s true that the vast majority of nuclear power stations can’t demand-match.
No, it’s not because you can’t make a demand matching nuclear power plant. The French have them.
It’s because like 99% of the costs involved in generating a kilowatt hour of nuclear electric power come from the power plant existing. Fuel and personnel costs are essentially static. Why would you demand match nuclear power when you can run it at 100% all the time at the same price?
The French have to do demand matching nuclear power plants because almost their entire energy source is nuclear. Another viable alternative is to have standby electricity demand (say, metal refinery plants?) to soak up the excess electricity production.
