Holy shit, man. Putting a set of Duracells in anything nowadays is a game of Russian roulette for how often they leak. Even cheap-ass no-name batteries aren't as bad as Duracell's become. I've had to clean battery leakage out of so many random electronics now that I've gotten my technique down to a science, all having to keep a big ass jug of vinegar handy at all times and dedicating an old electric toothbrush head to really get in there and scrub.

Costco's Kirkland-brand batteries are on thin ice, too. I swear, disposable batteries didn't used to be this bad. I've found some really, really old ones at a relative's house dating back to the 90s that still worked! Seriously, a pair of Panasonic-branded AAs that lasted all of 30 minutes in an Xbox One controller. That's laughably short, but still, I was impressed that they weren't completely flat, despite having a use-by date of 2007. Meanwhile, I've thrown out more than my fair share of Duracells that should still have plenty of years to go, some of which I hadn't even used yet.

Everything is shitty in Clown World, and batteries are no exception. Nowadays, if it has a battery compartment, you'd be wise to keep your batteries out of anything you won't be using for at least the next week. Battery acid's nasty stuff, and can corrode the terminals inside your device; or worse, leak into the rest and destroy it, though that only happens if you leave it sitting for years.

What's a good battery brand? Are there any left?

You can get two rechargeable battery modules for Xbox One gamepads for about $20 and they hold for rather a long time, IMO rechargeable batteries are decent enough these days to be fine in place of the disposable batteries, unless you intend using them for i.e. camping trips where you will need a bigger supply of those.

I feel you on the Kirkland brand batteries, I had to throw out a good many of them due to premature leakage.

That's why my parents got divorced.
What's worse was i had to sort through all of them during a power outage because all the batteries in the lanterns and torches were all dead despite not being used. So I was in the dark trying to see what ones were still good and I was getting acid on my hands. And I had to use rubbing alcohol to clean the contacts since the acid also leaked and dried on them.
