Y'know, this latest one wasn't the greatest episode, but it did seem to come from a really sincere place.
I classify it as a pretty decent AVGN episode.

Could he have actually gotten a lot better than Arin? Dude is funny but he's not particularly charming or attractive, he has a room temperature IQ, a history of racism and not particularly good looking career prospects. He doesn't have a higher education or any notable job history for the past like 20 years outside of playing NES games. I think he landed the best he possibly could.

Somehow he's loaded with a house despite all that.

As for Erin I guess they both like anal.

I will say, the ending to that episode was both sincere and in a way, kind of touching. I know how much Contra means to James, and even though the rest of the episode was pretty meh, I will say the ending did a good job at tugging at my heart strings, which I can't say AVGN has done for a long while.

So, kudos James.

A pretty good episode for Modern AVGN standards, some moments were a bit childish, sometimes really childish but I get this ominous feeling of nostalgia when he talks about his past. Much simpler times. I just can't help but relate to that last part. Modern AVGN is kind of hit or miss.

Haven’t seen the new episode yet. Modern AVGN are usually only OK (sometimes you get stinkers like Shrek and Black Tiger and Deck Enhancer) but I still get some enjoyment out of them. A one and done sorta thing most times. As for any childishness, AVGN has always been pretty damn Juvenile so to me that’s not an issue. As long as I get some chuckles or even one big laugh like the Ernie fight from last episode, I find it worth the watch.

I really doubt that. Mike is a turbo sperg who never looked that good to begin with and is looking more and more ghoulish with each passing night.

Also James with the "You can play as a mother fucking Woof" lmfao. But seriously, maybe he should just pivot to "Nostalgic/Sentimental Video Game Nerd" since it seems we're at a point where he's much better off talking about games he likes.

If I remember correctly the COVID lockdowns prompted James to put J&M Mondays on hold for a few months. After that Mike just decided not to come back since he had to commute a fairly long distance to James's house every week and was just tired of it since they had been doing J&M Mondays for 7 years.

If they had split the episode into old Contra and had a followup of bad contra it would have been better. Combining the two just made the last ten minutes insufferable (in an otherwise alright episode), literally "it's bad/good" for several minutes with no explanation.

Another alright episode. The shitstorm was unnecessary and sucked, and he could have went into the non-NES games a little more (like how Hard Corps' endings are difficulty based, which kinda sucks, or just a wee bit on why the PS1 games suck). Not many jokes, but if people love it I can completely see why.

My main criticism is more preference than the thing itself being bad, and that's the final bit of the video. I really don't care about nostalgia fixation, especially to that extent. It makes it sound like only past stuff was good, and everything nowadays sucks which isn't the case, especially in gaming. It gets annoying. I know it's always been a part of the channel, but it's getting a bit much between this and the VHS video to me.
