How much of a clusterfuck must someone be to fail at making a single friend through childhood and adolescence? Up until high school, one of my friends used to run to the school library as soon as recess began, and spent his whole time there devouring books. He was a fat loner, an annoying know-it-all weirdo, and an edgy fedoratheist in a Catholic school, and still managed to make a friend or two as that mess.

I knew someone who looked like white Bucky Miller and had serious problems with the concept of "not stinking", and he had friends and even a girlfriend once he learned how2hygiene.

I'm no social wonder myself, and still have friends whom I met in 6th grade.

Once upon a time, in the 90s and before, the losers would cluster together and form bonds of alliance over their shared dislike of 'the normals'. In this bizarre club they'd gain, not only acceptance of one another, but an understanding of exactly what made one another difficult company and eventually that would lead to a greater understanding of the self and provide some glib understanding of why they need to change and grow as people. Nowadays the losers are all racing to be more speshul than the next loser and splintering off from their own because they're too good for one another and finding likeminds a thousand miles away online to reinforce just how 'right' they are and why they specifically shouldn't change.

No IRL friends isn't a problem when you've got a 40something groomer terminally online chomping at the bit to validate all your poor choices and scratch your genetic social itch.

It's like having a very dedicated reverse therapist on call 24-7. No need to learn to socialize IRL or to confront your own bad behaviour to do so.

You had to have been a total shut-in to not make any friends until you were 18. Or somehow be so repulsive that not even the kids deemed the “weirdos” of the school wanted to be friends with you.
