The "statistic" about fatal medical errors in United States hospitals struck me as egregious, so I looked it up.

Turns out, it's total bullshit and a complete misrepresentation of the actual paper, which I am 1000% certain none of these bitches have read.

Turns out the shaving can let more bugs in so they mostly stopped unless the hair is physically in the way which it wouldn't be for birth.
I think the framing of episiotomy for the father's pleasure was mostly tongue in cheek. The medical system knew giving birth had permanent effects on a woman sexually and tried their best to offer a solution. They were thought to prevent negative after-effects from birth like incontinence. Then things become standardized and it can be hard to get rid of them. There's still things done routinely today without good evidence. Not sure of the evidence for episiotomies specifically but I hate the sound of cutting in those areas lol.

Piggybacking onto this to add - twilight anesthesia. These women had mothers or grandmothers who gave birth at home, yet by the 60s and 70s birth had become weirdly medicalized where you went to the hospital, got knocked out, and sent home (sometimes with pelvic floor dysfunction brought on by forceps) - the end!

And it was weird because within their mom's or at least their grandmother's own memory birth was largely a home affair with none of that.

I wish it was only tongue in cheek. Have worked with several OBs who do it and fully commit because of the patient’s husband and say it out loud to the gaggle of nurses. And they are 100% serious.
