Thank you for this. I’m having one of those annoying lightbulb moments when I’m realizing somehow I have actually believed these people. Even though I’m not in their cult, I believed they literally cared about the environment and the poor and financial equality.

But yes the most obvious explanation is they don’t believe it. They are the equivalent of the stereotypical Republican guy who hates gays but is doing the little tap tap in the bathroom and likes glory holes.

Meanwhile they would trash the Catholic ladies distributing food at the food bank and raising funds for single young moms.

Once he graduates — because he will, despite either raging alcoholism, a cocaine addiction, or both — he will have his pick of academic jobs. He will likely settle into a nice six-figure professorship at an elite university in a city and continue to sneer at the bourgeoisie, of which he is a member.

Kevin, with his expensive Derelicte clothes and CBD-oiled beard, is not representative of the vast majority of the academic class, but he is what everyone else is going to see. He’ll be on Twitter chatting all day and publishing books that few people will actually read, but they’ll get a write-up in The New Yorker anyway. He’ll be called a new, fresh voice in queer studies. He’ll do blow off a twink’s ass openly on social media and no one in his department will dare to say anything. Essentially, he’ll be Joe, maybe without the trooning. Maybe.

I became an “academic” because I love to read and write and learn. I also love to teach. I love my colleagues, who are hardworking, brilliant, creative people who had a good idea of what they were getting into, but maybe not how badly the system was ultimately going to fail them. Now, we are a joke and our life’s work is lampooned everywhere, by people on both the extreme right and left, screaming about groomers and wokeism and capitalism and racism and transphobia in diatribes that can be read in less than a minute, but not explained or understood. And people like Kevin continue to become the face of our profession, because everything is a business, everything is about Twitter and algorithms and ratios and outrage.

Also, Kevin doesn’t have any student loans to pay off. He got a free ride for his tuition and is supported financially by the First Anarchist Bank of Mom and Dad.
