President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

That and the only demographic crisis the USSR had was "too many mouths to feed", not modern Russia's "declining birthrates and shrinking population".

Mutually Assured Destruction means Russia doesn't use nukes in the first place.
That’s a good thing we need to bring back people have forget about it.

Lol, this is like the US or Canada sending out Sea Cadets in a war against Jamaica.
Remember that Jamaica should be winning in that scenario, having prior defeated likes of 101st airborne and such.

A bunch of Ukrainian channels and news sites reporting this but link to Russian AG isn't loading for me, so I'll add a bit of salt here, especially that sounds almost like joke, but then what's not about Russia these days.

Prosecutor of Nenets Autonoumous Disrtict put forward charges about mass desertion, for the conscript servicemen. Presented evidence shows that 295 servicemen refused to follow orders of their platoon commander and willingly left the battlefield which made tactical operation fail.

... so RF platoon is usually 50-60 people full strength and commanded by a lieutenant. 295 people is more like a battalion tactical group, so typically a major should be in charge. Sounds plausible if command post got nuked and left over lieutenant wanted to do something retarded, I can see a bunch of dudes say fuck it and just take off. We'll see if there is more news on it.

Also military tribunal usually works on desertion cases that are started by local, civ AGs where conscripts are coming from (since usually that's where they go back to) so that also passes sniff test.

That report comes from 2019, 5 years of toothless sanctions against Russia so that they leave their friggin neighbors alone. Russians didn't just annex Crimea and invaded Donbas, they were constantly stirring shit up.

I know that most people don't pay attention, but Russia/Vlad has been fucking with Ukraine for 8 long years. You fuck around, you find out. The real issue is that for 8 years Ukrainians could not really do shit beyond complaining, but Vlad did plenty, fucking up infrustructure, destroying Crimea, persecuting civic leaders and opposition in Crimea and Donbas. All the weak signals, such as weak sauce sanctions just emboldened Vlad to go further.

As always, poor Russia. They are trying to fuck over their neighboors and everyone is threatening them and help the neighbor to fight against them.

I'm not so sure about 'toothless.' This date coincided with the start of period lasting down to the present where Russia has had severe difficulty with bringing alleged superweapons like the SU-57 and T-14 Armata to production, or updating their tanks, most of which have been found to lack basics seen on any modern NATO tank. The parade Armata even broke down in Red Square due to gearbox troubles (I wonder if the officer responsible had some Putin green tea afterwards). While there were vast gaps so that supposed existing deals were permitting, which meant Germany and France (a big source of Russian military electronics) sold billions to Russia until now, the sanctions did play some role in the present Russian debacle.

Russian Frigate Admiral Makarov said to have been struck by Neptune missiles close to Snake island. This has been reported here, but this video seems new. Friggin robovoice.

Fron Uke sources and unconfirmed. But indications the Black Sea fleet continues to have a rough go of it. It looks like they took a drone strike to a landing craft at Snake Island.

I've also seen some footage that would apear to be a series of missile or artilery strikes on or around a Russian Sub as it was submerging. S there may be a damaged or even sunk sub out there. Probably a mangy old Diesel Electric. (Do they let nukes in the Black Sea? )

Francis is a confusing one. I'm tempted to believe he's just talking to Kirill going "yeah sure whatever" about the bullshit he's spouting and it's getting misinterpreted, trying to be diplomatic to avoid upsetting these Eastern counterparts. He also comments on how he's sent multiple people in his place to Kyiv.

He also comments on how Kirill can't just be "Putin's altar boy", apparently when on a Zoom call where Kirill read off all the reasons for the invasion off card for 20 minutes of a 40 minute call.

So I think people may just be reading into the Francis stories what they want to due to thinking he's a jackass while he's being relatively reasonable wanting to talk to the people in the Russia to tell them to stop the war. That has to be a bit weird to talk to some major religious leader that just suddenly starts things off trying to argue in favor of death and destruction. So could have flubbed some of the language when trying to be diplomatic rather than going "yo what the fuck".

NATO and the Kremlin
Pope Francis' concern is that Putin, for the moment, will not stop . He also tries to think about the roots of this behavior, about the reasons that push him to such a brutal war. Perhaps the "barking of NATO at Russia's door" prompted the head of the Kremlin to react badly and unleash the conflict. "An anger that I don't know if it was provoked - he wonders - but perhaps eased, yes" .

And now those who care about peace are faced with the great question of the supply of weapons by Western nations to the Ukrainian resistance. An issue that does not all agree, that splits the Catholic and the pacifist world. The Pontiff appears doubtful, his doctrine has always had at the center the refusal of the arms race, the no to escalation in the production of weapons that sooner or later someone decides to test on the field, causing death and suffering. «I can't answer, I'm too far away, to the question of whether it is right to supply the Ukrainians- he reasons -. The clear thing is that weapons are being tested in that land. The Russians now know that tanks are of little use and are thinking of other things. Wars are fought for this: to test the weapons we have produced. This was the case in the Spanish Civil War before the Second World War. The arms trade is a scandal, few oppose it. Two or three years ago a ship loaded with weapons arrived in Genoa which had to be transferred to a large freighter to transport them to Yemen. The port workers did not want to do it. They said: let's think of the children of Yemen. It's a small thing, but a nice gesture. There should be so many like that. "
Francesco's words, in conversation, always return to what is more right to do. Many have asked him for the symbolic gesture ofa visit to Ukraine . But the answer is clear: « I'm not going to Kiev for now - he explains -. I sent Cardinal Michael Czerny, (prefect of the Dicastery for the Promotion of Integral Human Development) and Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, (the Pope's almsgiver) who went there for the fourth time. But I feel I don't have to go. First I have to go to Moscow, first I have to meet Putin . But I'm a priest too, what can I do? I do what I can. If Putin opened the door ... ».
The Orthodox Church
Could Patriarch Kirill, head of the Russian Orthodox Church, be the man who can persuade the Kremlin leader to open a door? The Pontiff shakes his head and says: «I spoke to Kirill for 40 minutes via zoom. The first twenty with a card in hand he read me all the justifications for the war. I listened and told him: I don't understand anything about this. Brother, we are not clerics of state , we cannot use the language of politics, but that of Jesus. We are shepherds of the same holy people of God. For this we must seek ways of peace, to put an end to the firing of weapons. The Patriarch cannot transform himself into Putin's altar boy.I had an scheduled meeting with him in Jerusalem on June 14th. It would be our second face-to-face, nothing to do with the war. But now he too agrees: let's stop, it could be an ambiguous signal ».

Don’t be ‘Putin’s altar boy,’ Pope warns Russian Orthodox leader

Pope Francis warned the leader of the Russian Orthodox Church not to be “Putin’s altar boy” and justify the Russian president’s invasion of Ukraine.
In a Tuesday interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Francis said he spoke with Patriarch Kirill, a key supporter of Vladimir Putin and his war, for 40 minutes over Zoom. During the March 16 conversation, Francis said, Kirill was listing off all the justifications for the war from a sheet of paper he was holding.

“I listened and then told him: I don’t understand anything about this,” Francis said. “Brother, we are not state clerics, we cannot use the language of politics but that of Jesus. We are pastors of the same holy people of God. Because of this, we must seek avenues of peace, to put an end to the firing of weapons.”

Then, Francis, who has repeatedly called for an end to the war, went one step further and challenged Kirill not to follow along with the actions of the Russian president.

“The patriarch cannot transform himself into Putin’s altar boy,” the pope said.
[How Putin’s invasion became a holy war for Russia]
The Russian Orthodox Church, in a statement released Wednesday, responded, “It’s regrettable that a month and a half after the conversation with Patriarch Kirill, Pope Francis chose the wrong tone to convey the content of this conversation.”
The statement said that Kirill had sought to help the pope see the pro-invasion point of view, repeating Russian claims about attacks on Russian speakers in Ukraine.

Kirill then told Francis that “promises were not kept” about NATO not expanding after the end of the Soviet era.
The statement noted that “the Pope said, in agreement with the Patriarch, that ‘The Church must not use the language of politics, but the language of Jesus.’ Pope Francis added that ‘we are shepherds of the same Holy People who believe in God, in the Holy Trinity, in the Holy Mother of God: that is why we must unite in the effort to aid peace, to help those who suffer, to seek ways of peace, and to stop the fire.’ ”
Kirill, 75, was elected in 2009 as patriarch of the influential Russian Orthodox Church, which has more than 100 million followers. Orthodox Christianity is the dominant faith in both Russia and Ukraine — but since the war, the church has contributed to a rift between Moscow and Kyiv, as Kirill has dug his heels into pro-war rhetoric.

Last month the patriarch stood before a main cathedral for the Russian armed forces and called on Russian soldiers to “love our fatherland … protect it, as only Russians can defend their country.” He described those affected by the conflict in Ukraine as “people of Holy Russia. They are our brothers and sisters.” He has also lauded military service as “an active manifestation of evangelical love for neighbors.”
In the past decade, Russia’s geopolitical ambitions have been tied up with faith, as Putin began embracing the church for political gain. The relationship between Kirill and Putin helped lay the foundations of the war as they both echoed each other’s rhetoric to justify Russia’s actions in Ukraine. As Putin used the language of faith to cloak his political and military ambitions, Kirill also used sermons to rationalize the campaign on spiritual grounds.
Kirill’s tenure has proved divisive, as priests across Ukraine and Europe have condemned his support for the war. Nearly 300 priests and deacons of the Russian Orthodox Church signed an open appeal calling for reconciliation and an immediate cease-fire. In Ukraine, more than 320 priests signed another letter accusing the patriarch of preaching “heresy” and committing “moral crimes by blessing the war against Ukraine,” and asking church leaders to decide on whether the patriarch should be deposed.

Kirill, who once described Putin’s leadership as a “miracle of God,” faces possible sanctions from the European Commission over his support of the invasion, according to Agence France-Presse. The New York Times also reported that the European Union plans to sanction the patriarch, according to diplomats who have reviewed the document. To the outlet, a senior spokesman for the Russian Orthodox Church compared the sanctions to decades of repression suffered by the church under Soviet rule.
Francis also noted that he has requested a meeting with Putin. “We have not yet had an answer, and we are still insisting,” the pope said.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists Wednesday that “no agreements on meetings” have been made, Russian news agency Tass reported.

Pope Francis appeared to partly blame the West for Russia's invasion of Ukraine in an interview published this week, suggesting that the "barking of NATO at Russia's door" may have forced Putin's hand.
"An anger that I don’t know if you can say was provoked, but maybe facilitated," the Pope told the Italian Corriere della Sera newspaper.

Putting the works of Man on the same level as the works of God is exactly why Catholicism tends towards idolatry.
Except the Bible itself was a product of tradition. They basically took ancient Jewish and Christian writings, looked at which ones were in line with Church tradition, and removed the ones that weren't. The very same "idolatry" that people condemn in Catholicism helped shape the Bible in the first place. That's why you don't have gnostic BS in the Bible.

In 20 years we can expect Chinese genes to have killed off the nation of Russian by removing the average Russian's near-immunity to drug and alcohol poisoning.

By the time this war ends, Russia is going to be Northern China. And not just because Russia is becoming more reliant on China by trade.

Russian women who don't have enough men to date thanks to this war can always find comfort in the arms of Chinese men who don't have enough women back home.

A few days old. But something we had not picked up on. Apparently Europe is done with Russian Energy. And a more interesting element is the ability to insure shipments of Russian oil or gas for anybody else.

Hopefully, they stick to their guns this time, instead of reverting back to being oil junkies reliant on Russia.

That and the only demographic crisis the USSR had was "too many mouths to feed", not modern Russia's "declining birthrates and shrinking population".
So Russia went from having too many people, to not having enough. Something must be going wrong there with family planning and having kids. Probably something to do with abortion on demand and copious amounts of vodka consumption.

nah, the Crimea sanctions were absolutely toothless and affected primarily shit in Crimea, like installing generator parts there, but not mainland Russia at all. The Russians themselves were laughing at them, so hard that they even made t-shirts:

this guy should be familiar. (spolier: he is not so happy now, because current sanctions are pretty real)

Both France and Germany basically traded weapons and systems through the billion loopholes.

Otherwise, Russia has been going to shit since forever. The shitshow with "AK-12" alone was epic. It's a lolcow country and sanctions or not, it will not stop russians steal money and present "no-equal" (analogov nyet) bullshit.

Wasn't the Ukr Air force supposed to be utterly, completely, 183% destroyed on the first day?
No, that was the navy. I don't think they have a lot of aircraft to spare though, so they can't risk them running random bombing raids.
