actual nato forces in europe have seen a huge decline since the end of the cold war. germany went from almost half a million troops in the 80s to less than 200k in the 2010s. similar situation with france, they had over 500k in '89 and are now down to like 300k. likewise, the number of US forces deployed abroad also dropped off a cliff after 1989.

Armchair Generaling here. But it looks like to me Russian military objectives have steadily been downgraded to keeping what they have now and "liberating" the rest of the Donbass region. After the rest of Donbass is taken, Putin will declare victory but keep a "peacekeeping" force to ensure Ukraine can't regain any significant territory.

Either or not this thing ends in a situation like Donbass had where both sides mostly just shake their fists at one another and use occasional artillery but little to no advances or an actual negotiated peace treaty, remains to be seen.

Then the Ukrainians rebuild and re-arm. Their strategy has been largely validated. Believe the Russians would have rather more to do, if they have the guts starting with cleaning out the graft and corruption within their military. Way too many rubles appropriated for military weapons, supplies, and personnel disappeared into people's pockets. Unless and until Putin stops the graft and corruption, any rebuilding of Russian conventional forces would likely achieve little.

Suggest any peace treaty/armistice/cease-fire agreement would need to guarantee Russia leaving Odesa alone. Ukraine needs that port for grain exports.

They're still doing it, trying pretty much everything they can think of to prolong, escalate and widen the war without giving a solitary single fuck about how many dead or refugee'd Ukies that costs, or how badly it trashes the European, and ultimately the global economy and how many people are impoverished by that.

Russia is the bad guy in this situation, but the US, EU, Nato and Ukrainian government are also the bad guys. It's a conclave of cunts and the only genuine good guys are Vince McMahon and Alexander Lukashenko.
