What's worse is that you can tell people have never actually read it or know the connotation put behind Dante's words. If you've actually gone in-depth into Dante's Divine Comedy, and more specifically, Inferno, the context behind the ultimate, final circle of the last layer of hell is not betrayal in itself, but betrayal against "God's Design." The reason for Brutus' (the most cited member) being there is that Brutus committed treachery upon what Dante viewed as the centralization and apex of God's design on Earth, an entity of power that would supposedly last forever after its founding: The Roman Empire.I'm assuming mentions of the lowest circle are just anecdotes they've heard and assumed it was actually from scripture
This is but a minute part of mis-interpretation of the Comedy, but the most apt, since it is the most popular and wide-spread. When people state bullshit like "the final circle of hell is for the treacherous," you can tell that they do not actually know the breadth of Dante's Divine Comedy, because they would know this if they had read it. Sorry for the spergout, I have been meaning to share this but did not know when it was fitting, and will retract if it is too sperg-y.
Apologetic Edit: I thought about it some more, and here is a take tying to Nick's known egotism and theistic views. If Fuentes has actually read it, and compares his situation to martyrdom or Inferno's context of treachery whilst understanding Dante's interpretation of Christianity, this would definitively mean that Fuentes is genuinely deluded into preemptively assessing himself as an instrument of divine will, when, under his own teachings (which he, by Simon's account is apparently non-pious towards), it cannot be known unless his actions do in fact spiritually aid the will of god in the long run. If it may be summarized by increasing pious believers to reap their souls to heaven prior to the day of judgement, Nick's actions go against this, as he does not pursue the creation of large families. In good faith, he egotistically slothfully works in his own interests, claims he is a martyr, and leads young men to ruination. In a more skeptical light, Fuentes captures naïve and good people with his charisma into a cult of personality (as he tries to emulate stalin and the Pop-figure Kanye West), and tosses them aside when they are no longer useful, or slight him in any manner. In all, this is a dangerous person who should not be associated with.
