I support this line of thinking in a very general sense, but just for discussion, when is a happening large enough to actually be substantial and not a distraction? Some comedian has a bit about "9-11 was a distraction" comparing it to if you murdered someone to distract from stealing their wallet, kind of a related idea. I disagree with you about this specific case though, I think that actual action overturning Roe is the opposite of what tptb want to keep people divided.I think this whole Roe v Wade being overturned leak is just another distraction to keep us plebs divided.
I do very much believe abortion in general is very cynically deployed for political means on both sides. It's entirely separate from real, underlying issues of power and economics but there's also very little room for any sort of middle ground. The Right can draw people in who would otherwise either oppose them or just not care while the Left can use the threat of abortion rollbacks to get people to "vote harder, we'll totally act just as soon as we have more votes." Just look at the views both the Left and Right projected onto Biden's very tepid support of abortion rights during 2020. He basically said, "yeah, whatever Mack, I'll support the party line on that," with no actions to back that up and both sides claim him as a pro-choice crusader.
It'll be interesting to see how the party leaders react if it really is overturned, both have played strategies for years largely contingent on the threat or possibility of action. How does, for example, the Texas or South Carolina Catholic bloc vote if abortion becomes irrelevant? Has the GOP expanded the culture war frontiers sufficiently to keep former single-issue voters in line?
