Well like a lot of TWs, Billy’s just jealous and wishes he could get an abortion too.

Plus, “no one’s killing babies” isn’t going to convince anyone because that’s literally the point of contention between the two sides. Pro-lifers tend to think it’s equal to killing an infant, pro-choicers think of it as different. People screech about it being an “attack on women,” but I bet there’s a big overlap between people who are anti-abortion and people who think men have a duty to marry someone they got pregnant.
Well...AKKKKTUALLY [closing eyes and raising index finger for extra lecturing power]...both pregnant and non-pregnant people can get abortions
you are a medical essentialist bigot!

A better portrayal of the talking points I've seen out of this debate.
Dude! that is wayyy to rational to ever be accepted in the twitterverse

Right, the Bible says life begins at first breath.. I can't find the passage where Jesus explaining how to do abortion.

That Ciel book is marginally less tedious than "I put on my black eye-shadow, black lipstick, black corset and black combat boots" My Immortal, but far less funny. Indeed it is not funny at all, not even unintentionally.
Stephie wants to go stealth at school, whereas Ciel still wants to be seen by others as transgender.
What? Is that the same Stephie in the comics? Indeed the first time we saw Sandrat he was moping because he had no friends, and now he took the initiative breaking Stephie's shell?

No, they're entering secondary school and Stéphie wants to stay stealth toward her new friend.
There was a 2019 Tapas comic where Stéphie goes to the GSA only as a bisexual.
(and Billy removed the Tapas comic earlier this year)

Can't wait for the story arc where Stealth Steph starts sprouting a beard...

Oh wait, that will never happen because in Never-Never Quebec puberty never happens if you wish upon the diaper fairy!

The word is 'belly'. That's the colloquial term for the lower abdomen, and the way most children's media characterizes a pregnancy. "There's a baby in mommy's belly" as opposed to "There's a fetus developing in her uterus".

Which is an entirely different term from 'stomach', which is the organ used for digesting food. Maybe this is a weird translation issue (although it's hard to believe a translator wouldn't have picked up on the intended meaning and the fact that this implies that Sandrat, like many a Greek god, was swallowed by his parent), but I personally think it's a reasonably accurate reflection of Labelle's understanding of anatomy.

It is indeed a translation error. In the french edition (also available on piracy sites), the word is ventre, which means 'belly'.

I don't know if it's used euphemistically in French, but it can also mean 'womb' in several other Romance languages. And the French word for 'stomach' (the digestive organ) is estomac, which appears to have its meaning more closely tied to food.

Google Translate doesn't even bother with euphemisms. It goes straight for 'womb'.

It even correctly guessed from context (at least, in the first instance) that 'Ciel' is a person's name and not the literal sky.

So congratulations to David Homel for being outsmarted by a fucking bot.

Another little easter egg I found in the French edition - instead of Ciel saying he doesn't mind being called by female pronouns but prefers gender-neutral ones, the paragraph ends by saying it's hard to be called anything other "il" or "elle" in French, because grammar rules were invented by bearded men two centuries ago.

Funny, that – because I'm reading chapter 3 now, and this was not the only time Billy attached a negative connotation to facial hair:

Edit: That sentence in French is: "Certains d'entre eux ont déjà de la barbe, imaginez!" (Some of them already have beards, imagine!)

It's the common euphemism in French.
sort of like "girldick" in English
It's still a guy's dick. there's just some lipstick on the pig

Personally, I like the whole "intersex" thing as a validator
-besides the other term..congenital malformation (and I say that with all sympathy, it's not just genitals that are subject to birth defects, but a cleft palate doesn't make me a lion-boy...it's a euphamism we tell little kids to ease the pain)
the ones screaming BUT INTERSEX are mainly just run-of-the-mill dudes in dresses

Christ, Labelle's writing has gotten worse over the years. I didn't realise it before, but the juxtaposition between old and new in that post really draws it into focus.

Compare the ones from the Class Trip arc, originally published in March-April-May of 2016, to the ones from later. They almost all end with an attempt at levity. The jokes in them aren't good exactly, but you can tell at least that Billy understood the concept of Setup + Punchline. And the characters, while not exactly likeable, are established fairly consistently.

To his credit, it's almost always in reference to a situation that the previous panels have established. This one ends in a standard reversal gag in which we're led to believe that the kids will be disappointed by the parental boycott, but are excited to have fewer people to share the dorm with. This one is almost the opposite, when we are set up to expect surprise and possible revulsion at Erikur's coming out, but instead the kids (besides Raquel) are surprisingly tolerant and take it mostly in their stride.

This one, this one, and this one are all jokes at Raquel's expense (she of course being the designated transphobe for most of this arc). In this one, the joke is that the characters make light of a terrible situation. I don't get the joke in this one, but I can at least tell it's supposed to be a joke.

The notable exception is this one, which ends with Frank either crying or sweating bullets (it's not clear which) about what he's done by outing Stephie. Either way, the dramatic beat panel emphasises how awful he's feeling, which, again, is a situation that the previous panels have built up to.

It was in this period that Labelle peaked creatively. Compare that to 2019, when the page simply ends without a punchline:

The characters just... have a conversation, which concludes with Stephie saying the 100% expected response for this situation. Methinks Billy has gotten so complacent over the years, he just assumes his readers have gotten so invested in the characters' lives that they no longer need to be making jokes every 30 seconds, and that he can simply coast by on... the strength of his characters alone!

This is the same situation that was described through fucking narration in the second chapter of Ciel (2020) when any writer worth his salt have used dialog. (Yes, I will be reviewing more of this book.)

Screenshot 2022-05-12 at 22.37.19.png

If Billy could walk and chew gum at the same time, he'd convey this information though three panels of a comic with the fourth being a joke/dramatic pause/emotional response from one of the characters or at least SOMETHING to keep the reader engaged. But here it only does one thing, which is to convey information to the reader.

Dialog is a powerful tool in a writer's arsenal, but that doesn't mean it's easy to use. Most of the time it's written in a constrained environment where it needs to do many things at the same time. It needs to be a conversation that could plausibly take place at that point of the story, every character in it needs to act in a ways that's consistent with how they were previously established. They should reveal things to the reader, but not things they don't want to reveal to other characters. And if possible, it should hook the reader emotionally. Dialog is hard! So it's interesting they way Billy gives up on dialog as soon as he starts writing in a medium that doesn't force him into using it.

Also, the book would seem to indicate this conversation took place over the phone, whereas the comic shows it happening in person. But continuity errors are the least of his problems right now.

For fuck's sake. Kids like the colors and simple drawings. Sesame Street happened when Children's Television workshop tested kids and they preferred the puppets over people

Run THIS experiment - read them the Assigned Kiwi versions side by side. but not by that teacher, that's the second part -- the kids are prob keying off HER gay-citement

Hell, when I was that age, Rocket Robinhood meant more to me than my parents realized...and that show sucked

OTOH it might be the only thing objectively gayer than assigned male

In one comic Sandrat says he thinks growing a beard is gross, but he is not thrilled with breasts either, so he identifies as non-binary.

It also reminds me of this post from A&N regarding a transgender child in the UK.
They had a girl, their first born. This family seems the rare case where the mentally ill dad is driving the transition.

Agreed. Note that the son apparently doesn’t want facial hair while dad sports a full beard. Something is very fucked up in that house.
It's only speculation of course, but I can't help but wonder if there are similarities between that and this.

What did the bearded man do to you, Billy?
