Every time I'm left on my own to parent my little son I think about what I would do without my husband. As much as I appreciate my father being in my life, I still think I could raise a girl on my own just fine. My son? It's all good now but I can see how the staid male influence in his life is absolutely crucial. It's amazing that even me being the hardass that I am, he still snaps into shape around his father so much faster and copies him more frequently than he does me.

Edit to say, I am frustrated that we can't talk about broken homes in current society. Do I really need to pretext every time about how I know some powerful and strong single moms that made it work? That I know some great success stories of people who grew up in shitty homes? That of course leaving an abusive marriage is better than sticking around. No, I shouldn't because people still start screaming about "stigma" because they have the attention span of a gnat, or they're being purposefully obtuse.

Yes, bad shit happens, but broken homes are not ideal and are an important indicator of health and success. I'd like to think that if my mother had left my father I could hear this message and not take it personally.

Anecdotal evidence. "I know a kid without a father that grew up straight". Sure it happens sometimes but for every such kid there are 9 that grow up to be retards with low impulse control that will end up in jail or dead from OD or a drug robbery gone wrong.

No matter how strong "Stronk Waman" is, the lack of a male role model makes these kids unable to control their emotions and strength and they will end up as a statistics almost always.

Broken homes are broken homes and they lead to broken people. Broken young girls that become whores or broken young men that become locked up in prison.

If you just glance at the paper you'll see it is just another correlational study, a very first baby steps in establishing etiology, that is far from the proof, much less "pinpoint reasons infants die from SIDS" as per the headline -- but then, you know, journalism.

The researchers also apologized for not being to measure Acetylcholinesterase in the dried blood samples -- the combined power of motherhood and womanhood is nevertheless powerless against Nature. So even if the research hypothesis holds -- that SIDS is related to autonomic dysfunction, whose culprit is a defective acetylcholine system -- a big part of the puzzle is still missing.
