I don't fully understand how debt collection of this magnitude works but it seems really stupid to be flagrantly spending this much money on vacations. If he had any hope of arguing financial hardship he's torpedoed that.

I'm guessing he believes if he simply doesn't pay or admits to it they will ne er collect. While you can fight the amount of money owed you need money to fight it. And I doubt he has any. Or maybe he's hoping inflation reduces the hours needed to pay it off, but that would be a big brain move
