American Common Law requires a "not guilty" plea for capital crimes. Its an old precedent from when States like New York still had the death penalty. You can't plead guilty for a crime you can be hanged for. The State HAS to prove you did it via Jury. This serves two purposes. The first and primary purpose is it stops the State from overcharging. The other thing it does is prevent suicide by process, or similar shenanigans.

Since the States Attorney has charged the guy with Murder in the 1st degree, the Not Guilty plea is procedural.

Call me soft, but Jesus Christ. All of my regrets for clicking this. The opening of this stream with all that mundane driving-less the gun just casually sitting in the passenger seat-really doesn't do enough to prime the viewer for what comes next. You'd think that it would, knowing what transpired, but those first shots just went by so fast that I could barely process the victims collapsing one after the other. It's tragic that ten lives were cut short for nothing and I can only hope that those who died didn't suffer terribly before the end.

When the news came out that he pleaded "not guilty" at his arraignment, I was quite taken aback because the evidence for the crime and his intent were undeniable. Do you think that he lawyered up and was convinced to go for an insanity defence as some kind of Hail Mary?
