That's a great question. Personally, I'm guessing it would unlock more than just that: can egocentricity be triggered by acid trips? Personality disorders? Other cognitive or emotional problems? I'm unfamiliar with the latest studies. I wouldn't be surprised if they unscrew restraining bolts back on things like BPD or other disorders that aren't just schizophrenia.

Part of the problem of studying this kind of thing is it's a chicken or egg situation. Do people with BPD use drugs because they have BPD or do they have BPD because of all the drugs? You can replace BPD there with nearly any mental illness including "gender dysphoria." You can also replace "doing drugs" with lots of other life choices that can trigger that kinda thing. I think this is why they call psychology a "soft" science lol

Allow me to play armchair psychologist for a moment.

We know tony comes from the south and what he deems as a very repressive upbringing. He never connects with his parents religion, feels they are backwards, etc. At the same time, while he doesn't have many friends or connect to people IRL (as evidenced by the heavy internet usage of his youth) he feels he is intellectually enlightened, and that gives him a feeling of contempt and superiority toward those around him. He wants to prove that he is special and superior ans doesnt belong with those kind of people. After all he has a great GPA and really appears to be going places. His whole life is planned out and he is going to make it. He even dabbles with psychedelics to open his mind, which is a really popular thing among pseudo intellectual types.

Then he gets hit with the felony charge. His future goes out the window. He can no longer pursue his high status, intellectual based career. I think this was a huge blow to his identity as a person because he is no longer seen as that slightly odd but super smart kid who is becoming a doctor. He is a dead end failure in terms of career and his self perceived high intelligence isn't getting him anywhere. Not only that but he can no longer succeed "as a man" as he can no longer provide enough to attract a good mate. In addition and perhaps most importantly, he can't use his status as a doctor to lord over his family and the peers that never liked him.

So he has to find another way to get back at all those people and feel superior to them and this explains the pathetic behavior on reddit and twitter trying to be a super special trans justice and womens rights warrior.
