President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

Idk, when I was a kid one of my neighbors was a really old functional alcoholic guy who shouldn't have been alive even by modern standards, barely ever slept and worked physically well into his 70s until he died and he looked better, if older, than Putin and I'm sure putin had ridiculous amount of work put into his face which might just be it, botox, fillers and cosmetic surgeries.

Generally men tend to go skelly and women tend to puff up in my experience. Maybe putin just got tired of being a dude in his old age and started his hormones recently...
Putin tranny trajectory? The merge.

Apparently Putina is to restore the Pioneers for school children.

Azov has surrendered has been heroically evacuated from Mariupol to Russian occupied territory
I expected this in late March. It’s mid May. An absolutely heroic effort to hold the city. The Knights of Saint John would tip their hats to these lads and they fought in the great sieges of Rhodes and Malta. The steel works are likely useless now, the city itself is a wreck, and the Russians are too broke to fix any of it, and lost a load of MPR, armor, Spetznaz, and their meat shields to take it. Pyrrhic victory.

Macron reportedly wanted Zelensky to give putin a face saving "out" and cede some territory to russia.

I have also seen some claims that other western EU leaders have similar mindset as they're scared that if russia loses hard it will destabilize and there won't be a way back to "business as usual".
Well, they sure as shit are not going to give up the entire south or east of the river. Honestly, they should just be like "Yeah, man, OK - Here is your medal and way out. Take Mauripol all the way to Obryv. Now fuck off forever."

As said, read the article. No Victory for the Russians, Phyrric or otherwise. They've only evac'd the most severely wounded. Better part of 800 of the mad Ukie bastards are still under there.

Pioneers ... they allready have Youth-army. As hilarious it is to see how Russian commies go to church (to pray, not loot), that fucking country is so schizo it's beyond any comprehension.

I have no idea what's going on because wounded were evaced not to Ukrainian controlled land, but in RF controlled territories. There may be some special agreement in place, who knows.

Also, there is a well known dude who does interviewes with RF POWs and he said that the reason no Kadyrov's were ever interviewed, they are immediately exchanged for anyone and any conditions.

Anywho ... a huge salt mine opened up since wounded Ukrainians were transported and placed into a hospital, while russians were literally thrown out and to elsewhere, who knows where. Some Russian posters are bitching that RF soldiers are thrown out to care for wounded Nazis ... lol

Phone posting, but basically this Aussie defense analyst and gamer says aid to Ukraine is not stripping the cupboard bare.
The weapons cupboard specifically it looks like, which to be fair the one thing the U.S. (and by extension NATO) will never run out of is munitions I'd think. Hell they'd probably run out of drinking water before running out of materiel.

All its doing is jumpstarting some arms industries which, for all their hate they generate justified or otherwise cascades to fuck and back on other industries and economic spheres. Plastics and polymer makers, electronics makers etc all have to help fulfill those orders and process it, with a preference on most electronics and other pieces coming from either "home nation" companies or fellow NATO members and their own domestic industries. Hell, we're throwing 20 year old Brimstones at the Ukies because they're about to expire and they're still fucking up things.

Part of the deal brokered by Turkey. The wounded are evacuated to russian territory and officially captured, but receive immediate medical aid and prisoner exchange negotiations open as secondary to that. Meaning that for the 263, of which 51 are so critically injured they needed hospital beds immediately, the Russians might get about that many back who may be more able bodied. Not an exactly equitable exchange but the second any of the walking wounded make it back to Ukie lines they'll be celebrated and cheered (and ideally given lots of beer) from Orkhiv to Kyiv.

Ukraine should cede all claims to Belgorod People's Republic.

I don't know if you were posting in jest, but Belgorod was originally part of Kyiv, then Kharkiv disctricts (i.e. it being a province of) and Belgorod was Ukraine once, during the Tsar times

what's even more bizarro, around Belgorod (which is only 20mil from RF-Uki border) someone was distributing fliers proposing that Belgorod becomes part of Ukraine again:

Belgorod People's Republic

Let's restore historical truth: let's bring back Belgorod into Kharkiv district

Legion "Free Russia" is already at work

Legion Free Russia, which are Russian volunteers fighting against RF forces does exist, but they denied responsibility and claim it's a provocation by RF FSB

... shit comrades, this spy game is so complicated I'm not sure who the fuck is even benefit out it or what is it suppose to achieve. No idea how locals react either.

You see Tovarish, if everyone is confused, nobody can be certain about anything.
Unironically one of the oldest tricks in the Russian playbook. If you're just running endless gayops and gish galloping bullshit who can anyone trust? Why, you might as well believe Slava Rossiya because at least they're not globohomo...

Disappointing, but not surprising from that weak willed idiot Macron. He and Merkel were leading the way in going around U.S. sanctions and tying Europe closer to Russia. Not at all surprising that he'd cuck out now. Pathetic. Can't believe this guy won re-election.

It was either this cuck or a Vichyesque right wing apologist with financial ties to Russia.

If the defeat of Russia forces is catastrophic, then without occupied territories what does Russia have to bargain with? Ukraine, through the help of the West, essentially has the ability to hold access to international markets over the head of Russia indefinitely. It may make financial sense to pay up some amount of reparations, although I would imagine it would be political suicide for Putin, or perhaps even any potential successor.
I'm afraid reparations are inevitable, for one simple reason: Rebuilding Ukraine is going to be expensive, and almost certainly paid for by Europe. I can't imagine them not taking the opportunity to get Putin to pony up the costs of doing so, especially the Germans.

Imagine coming back quasi-victorious and alive from holding the Russians up at Mariupol only to die of alcohol poisoning at the celebration...

They should host the peace treaty signing / repetitions discussion at the Reichstag.
