General Discussion for Virtual Youtubers / Vtubers / Chuubas - it's okay to be a simp for 2D, just don't thirstpost.

The fascinating trainwreck of a company that was Activ8/Upd8 and their mishandling of Kizuna AI, who began to vanish into irrelevance just as the whole vtuber scene began blowing up (Miko's singing "niggaa", Fubuki scatman, etc). Then I became hooked on Otogibara Era, the original cricket eater.

Started with Melody in mid-February 2020, two weeks after that I watched THIS video and fell all the way down the hole. I'd lurked the farms occasionally for years before my join date, and I had been in this thread one or two times a week since about July 2020 or so for info, but I never even had an account here until late 2020 and even still I never interacted with this thread until the very last week of 2021.

What's the best way to do a poll in this thread? I'm curious about when everybody started following vtubers here. I'd guess even the vast majority of the regulars here started after myths debut or the Taiwan incident
This has reminded me a odd but vivid memory of how it all started...

I remember quite distinctively being of one of Kizuna AI earliest subscribers (less than 20k) as I stumbled upon her first week she was "born". At the time It blew my tiny mind that this anime girl was 3D and super smooth tracking, I kept telling myself "Man this is so fucking cool, this is the future I'm telling ya this is gonna be huge". So I kept actively watching her on and off for a couple years till it got a bit samey, because this was there time there really was no big EN vtubers, they were all Japanese.

Fast forward a few years, I stumble upon Hololive about October 2019 which I saw a clip of this weird looking cat friend playing a Minecraft speed course and I thought it was the cutest thing ever. I was hook, line and sinker, I wanted more.
This exact clip got me here where I am today, fuck me its feel so long ago.

Then I was there for all of the 4th Gen JP Holos Debuts and well the rest is history, haven't really stopped since. The Vtuber scene has changed SO MUCH since the Kizuna AI days, we are spoilt nowadays with translated clips, EN branch's, amazing animation and art, etc I could go on about all the things we have now. Back then I was happy the Japanese Kizuna AI making funny noises and words that I had no idea what she was saying and that made my day.

Man If only younger me knew how right I was all them years ago....

Just realized that Reimu Endou from Nijisanji EN third wave Ethyria hasn't release a single cover or original song. Fucking idiot.
But for real is it really difficult or expensive finding a good recording studio in Colombia?

I always knew about Kizuna AI. I did not care.
Then She appeared. Then I did care.

someone should post the fishman jeb meme

Its difficult going outside without being shot in Colombia.

That reminds me, I was gathering my favorite Eekum Bokum variations just yesterday.

Sakana wins worldwide is good, but for those who prefer the classic:

Lots of you already answered, thanks, but I decided to make the strawpoll anyway so if you don't mind you can vote again here.
Also i rephrased the question for clarity.

when did you start following the vtuber scene

(the milestones to separate the "eras" are arbitrary don't break my balls if you think I should have added something else)
I actually first started when I saw Eilene's Ebola-chan video when it popped off, so I wanna say 2014? Wish she still had at least some English content. She was pretty much a pioneer of Vtubing before it was even a word; haven't heard a lot of her recently though, all I know is that she currently has her own Vtuber group, and Natsumi Moe had a pretty bad breakup with her due to management. Also, some people here could probably use the advice in the thumbnail.
Seems NijiEN have got their hands on a PUBG Mobile sponsorship.

Posting Selen's POV, but her, Elira, Nina, and Reimu are involved, and I think Mysta has his own sponsored stream.

Me see funny Vtuber, me spend $200+ every week on the endless supply of $100 bundles pretending to be RNG and shitload of other scam-like monetizations.

I'm Pomu dolphin

Very dolphin-like sounds, in my opinion

After Gigguk's video about vtubers It popped up in my recommended at September-October 2020 (the only video I watched from him). Furendo cat crazy songs, Haachama say goodbye to english server, en girls overall and after that i stuck in rabbit hole subscribed more than 100 youtube channels and 20+ on twitch...

Looking at the past, Gura never really addressed most her fans' shenanigans. Yet her fanbase behavior have improved a lot, or at least whatever issues you have with them are only contained in her own chat and does not impact other's.
Her fanbase self policed itself into what it is now due to the efforts of older fans who were with Hololive before EN debuted.

I stand by my statement, but I also agree with my brother from another mother, Sopmod, on the Johnny Depp-Amber Heard defamation trial:

They both sound like complete assholes, but I think Depp's entire motive for the case was to make it clear that Amber is just as big of an asshole as he is. Because she clearly is.

Also Kiara sounds more like a cat in that video to me than a dolphin.

I knew of Kizuna Ai and watched her videos every now and then but I wouldn't say that I simped for her other than buying merch a couple of times. Really got into vtubers around the start of the pandemic. Saw a bunch of people I know posting about it and I was like bruh, why did it explode now all of a sudden, Kizuna Ai, Kaguya Luna, etc have been around forever. Finally decided to cave in and see what all the fuss is about by watching some Korone clips and was like this is cute af, caught one of her DOOM gameplay streams live and then quickly fell down the rabbit hole after that.

You can find my first post in this thread on page 18.
I got interested when Korone was playing Banjo-Kazooie and Grant Kirkhope responded to her (I was watching interviews that people did with Kirkhope at the time). Stuck around watching it because I've never seen anyone play the Japanese version before.

Did the very minimum of research and I'm very whelmed. With all the fujos crazy about Vox I was curious about what he looks like and he's so... average. He's not some troglodyte or anything. Also, what the fuck, I'm sorry if this is common knowledge, I don't really care that much about the NijiEN Males outside of Luca, but Yugo is quite an attractive girl?
