Nationalism arose in opposition to hereditary aristocracy and imperialism. A key turning point was the War of the Spanish Succession, where the peace treaty determined that Spain and France should never be under the same king. Globalism came much later. Democracy follows upon nationalism. If a government should correspond to a particular people, then it doesn't make sense for it to be headed by a foreigner, as happened in England with the Hanovers.

Since most people are non-ideological, most people have no coherent beliefs whatsoever. They're blood-and-soil nationalists when talking about Ukraine or American Indians, and flip around to be globalist "a country is nothing more than a GDP zone agreed upon at the UN" retards when talking about the USA and Europe.

Serbian nationalists weren't fighting against the Austro-Hungarian Empire because they wanted an arbitrary patch of ground to be ruled by a multi-ethnic government. They wanted Serbs, the ethnic group, to be independent of Austrian rule.
