Comrades, from the very beginning of the assault on Mariupol, I covered the events that were raging around my city. I think Russia's major problem regarding modernization has more to do with brain drain overall. Yeah in the near term the lack of access to western tech, which is prohibitively expensive, locks them out, but they could figure out their own version otherwise.

As for nukes and budgeting, nukes are the only proven thing to keep the US at bay and there's no competing with the US military budget anyway. They should tackle corruption first and foremost once this is done, regardless of the outcome.

What's in the bill​

The bill includes an increase in presidential drawdown authority funding from the $5 billion the Biden administration originally requested to $11 billion. Presidential drawdown authority funding allows the administration to send military equipment and weapons from US stocks.
The bill also provides $6 billion in Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative funding, another way the Biden administration has been providing Ukraine with military assistance. The funding allows the administration to buy weapons from contractors and then provide those weapons to Ukraine, and as a result does not draw directly from US stocks.
According to a fact sheet from House Democrats, the funding will be used to assist Ukrainian military and national security forces and will go toward weapons, equipment, training, logistics and intelligence support as well as other needs.
There will also be roughly $9 billion to help restock US equipment that has been sent to Ukraine, which comes as many lawmakers have raised concerns about replacing US stocks of weapons the US is giving to Ukraine, especially stingers and javelin missiles.
The bill provides $3.9 billion for European Command operations, which includes "mission support, intelligence support, hardship pay for troops deployed to the region and equipment, including a Patriot battery," according to a House Democrat fact sheet. The Department of Defense has added additional US troops in Eastern European countries to bolster support for NATO allies near Ukraine since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began.
To address humanitarian needs, the bill will include $900 million to bolster refugee assistance, including housing, trauma support and English language instruction for Ukrainians fleeing the country.
The measure provides an additional $54 million that will be used for public health and medical support for Ukrainian refugees.

This is a pretty long post from Twitter with multiple dated updates detailing the approach Twitter is taking to censoring information about the war in Ukraine. I assume they are getting guidance from the Biden administration on this, despite the fact that the official disinformation board seems like it's going to be moving to a more behind the scenes status. Of course, if you already use Twitter to follow war news, you are probably aware of multiple accounts being suppressed or removed, but it's good to see what the official public policy is. Of course, this is only what they deem fit to reveal publicly, so I'm sure there's more going on inside Twitter.

erdogan doesn't have any love for america, but he doesn't have any love for russia either, and between the two, russia is by far the bigger geopolitical adversary to turkey because of caucasus shenanigans.
meanwhile the only major friction between turkey and the west right now is because of western support of kurds in syria, without that i think turkey would generally be a lot more aligned with the west than it currently is.
well i guess the cyprus dispute is another source of friction, but that one is pretty low level and has been dormant for decades so i think both sides are content with just keeping up the status quo forever.

Making a separate alliance just for the Baltic states would be absurd and undermine what NATO is supposed to be, it won't happen. I'm sure everyone knows how things are already going to go but they have to do the ol' rigamarole to justify things publicly.

neither america nor sweden+finland care much about what nato is supposed to be in this context. in principle america could just sign bilateral security treaties with them that allow the stationing and operation of US forces on their territory, and that would achieve the exact same security/deterrence effect they'd get from nato membership.

full nato membership does have a bigger propaganda impact though, and will probably have a bigger triggering effect on the russians who are very paranoid about that organisation specifically, so if possible this is still the preferred approach.
