Lore is for fan fiction writers. I care about their personality and ability to entertain.
As @White Stone mentioned, lore is for fanartists. And stale reddit memes, so it balances itself out.

I'd say that pre-debut lore is a crutch to break the ice in the very first steps of a vTuber's carrer, before a bond between a chuuba and their fanbase forms. As the bond grows stronger, the need for lore disappears, but it still may be an inspiration for the streamer or a source of casual banter.

Lore created spontaneously during vTuber's career, like Haachama's sister arc or something as simple as "Subaru is a duck" meme is a bit different, because it's either a part of their work or a sign of a developing connection between them and the audience. It feels much more natural than something the company cooked up before even deciding on the VA behind the avatar (it may still become boring if overused though).

How many birthdays are there this month? La+ having her countdown stream, taking calls. I came in late, so I'm guessing this Bibi hat is either a gift or she's always had it. Look at this brat go.

Stream for thos interested:
EDIT: the realization La+ has her layout the way it is is because if she did any other way, it's possible she might be too smoll :story:

just imagine if her avatar and chat wasn't so big, she would be so smoll if she just put herself in a corner. Also, her horns prolly don't help with the whole screen real estate :story:

EDIT2: Birthday goods, usual poster + arcylic stand. Unique good looks like to be a neckpillow that can also change into her mascot

and now she's singing SSS :story:

Debut lore written by a starry eyed pre-debut talent ( or the team that developed the character) is a lot like like planning for a battle: It usually doesn't survive first contact.

Ame gets a lot of mentions about reworking the detective angle, but Kiara and Ina should get recognized as well for following that route. The Phoenix warrior lore for example became secondary, what really worked was the lore that developed as she grew KFP, which was her idea from the start. It went from investors into indentured servants posing as employees, the Usual Room became a reality and now she's up to owning a Mech suit. Her organizing the birds of Hololive into a unit with its own history is what brought her Phoenix back to relevance and no doubt helped the others.

As for Ina. she created the Takodachi but it was the community she fostered that made them into what they are today: earnest, if dopey with a poor diet and limited brain functions. Like Minions with tentacles. instantly memorable compared to the others in EN, to a point where now Ina has created Takos of each EN member. Ina herself has also developed a lot of lore to what she is - a lot more lowkey than Kiara, but its there. From creepy photos of her as a child suggesting that she is far older than she appears (plays into her being on the verge of Hagdom) to her recent Observer character she developed for April 1st.

The point is that the initial lore shouldn't be over planned. It should be there vaguely to get the ball rolling, but it's up to the talent to build upon it, otherwise it just gets tired real fast and you end up with 4 girls barely acknowledging it.

Ina is definitely going through some hard times right now.

Since the start of the month she's started using her private twitter again, going back up from about 5 tweets to 14:

(In a rare display of opsec, Ina periodically nukes all of her tweets from this account. The only easy to find references are from public replies.)

Along with this, she's complained on several different platforms of general pain, along with both mental and physical exhaustion.
Whatever the core issue is, I hope she's able to overcome it. The priestess tends to overwork herself.

Lore has a life of its own, and sometimes it will grow at the behest of the talent, and sometimes will come from memes that occur as they experience 'interesting times'. I doubt Pekora set out to be a war criminal rabbit, but she gets a lot of mileage out of it and it'll stick with her for the rest of her days.

It's like a toolbox: "Oh, here's some lore for you to use, now run with it!" Of course, they have to put in at least some effort and creativity, or else you get someone like Anya, who is...uh, a knife. And that's it.

It would be interesting to compare 'debut lore' with 'current lore' to see how things like that change over time for the talents. How they are presented to the public versus how they are perceived now, what worked and what didn't. It's quite interesting to think about.

I was wondering about that comment she made about being 'completely wrapped up in Salon Pas' or whatever. My wife uses those for severe joint pain, so I am a bit worried about what's up with Ina. She has been working two jobs for a while, and that shit catches up with you (I can imagine how her back must feel, being either stuck hovering over a Wacom tablet or hovering over her keyboard for untold hours a day. I fixed computers for 13 years straight, and my back is fucked as a result).

Akai Haato got demonetized due to her way-too-sexy-for-TV ASMR streams.
She got demonetized in like 2019 or 2020 and hasn't since. In fact she's been actively trying to get demonetized for a while now, hence why her H-art and ASMR streams have gotten increasingly more explicit. She even turned off monetization herself after youtube still didn't.

Pretty sure I recall her specifically stating that demonetization was one of her goals during the schizo arc itself, so Cover's concerns were probably related to community guideline strikes, not monetization.

See, I do agree that Kiara did salvage herself somewhat because her "Phoenix warrior with terrible shield and sword" design was the least interesting of the 5 girls. The KFP thing is the most interesting thing she did but I still find it a really boring gimmick. It's just the bland "All my viewers are forced to do what I say" thiing. Loads of other girls did that long before she even debuted.

I don't like Kiara because her entire bit seems to be flip-flopping around between things. Debuted and was boring? Okay, well, now she's a super lesbian obsessed with Cali which was just cringe. That didn't take off as well as she expected because Cali got so popular on her own? Okay, well, at least I'm the only one who can speak Japanese fluently! Oh... that just annoyed my fanbase when I tried to shoehorn it in... well, now I'm the "fan girl" stereotype obsessed with Pekora. Okay, that kinda worked but after I met her, it burnt out quickly. Now I run KFC. Okay, that didn't really take off. Well, now I'm a talkshow host with the Japanese girls to leech off their popularity. Well, that burnt out surprisingly quickly... Okay, now I'm a dictator in charge of KFP forcing my viewers to work for me. Okay, that kinda worked. Well, now I'm the "head" of the Holobirds, because I'm the 3rd most popular of the group (despite being the number 1 in subs), but at least the 1st can't even speak English so poor Subaru has to awkwardly sit in the corner during collabs.

I have no idea what gimmicks she's still doing at the minute or other gimmicks she was bouncing around doing between the ones listed above. I think she's got the weakest "gimmick" and personality as a character and if someone put a gun to my head and told me to name her gimmick, I'd say it's just leeching off other members. She's the one always trying to do off-collabs to get fan art made. She's the one who has most heavily connected herself to her iRL persona. She was desperate to be the first to collab with as many JP talents as popular. She tried to force herself into the popular Pekora/Moona pairing when that was huge, the second it burnt out, she lost interest in it entirely.

Ame's lore and personality did change a lot so much so she's probably my favourite of Myth. Cali's did too but Cali's first personality of being kind of awkward and weird just didn't work for me, her 'I'm a cool boomer dad chad' thing also doesn't really work at all for me. Gura has been pretty consistent from what I've seen. Ina, I haven't watched a lot of because she's just 'fine' to me. Not one I've ever wanted to seek out to watch but not annoying like I find Cali can be or Kiara just is.

That is correct. She wasn't too worried about the demonetization. But Cover was worried about her channel being terminated because of the violent imagery in the decapitation/self-harm videos and such (that, and she had to private a bunch of her lore videos because of the presence of copyrighted music).

She's gone from this (Oopsie, I was slapped down for sexy ASMR):

Good lord, do you just take what you see on /vt/ with blind faith? She's had issues with Pekora because she went from idolizing her as a fan to having to work with her and that's an awkward transition. She realized over time that she went way too hard too often and started to dial shit back all the way back to the Summer of last year. All three of the original birds spoke fluent Japanese so there was always quite a bit of Japanese in any of the Subaru collabs, and the only reason the most recent one had less Japanese is because Mumei knows zero Japanese compared to Subaru being able to hold small talk in English.

She's never lost her KFP bit, the TakaMori shit being kicked to the curb was because she got tired of being pidgeonholed into it by fans consistantly whenever she'd even so much as try to go 'teetee' with any other member and people would spazz about Mori, and she's talked extensively about seeing the other girls as having more useful qualities or skills than her. Call her an insecure doofus and I'd agree, but leveraging HoloTalk as a way to leech is just retarded.

wait till fall, I think august/september is even more stacked (or I'm getting the dates wrong)

I do totally get why this doesn't happen, learning a language requires a lot of regular dedication, and corpo Vtubers seem like they tend to have pretty busy schedules regularly. A while back Selen mentioned having a teacher and getting that one Genki coursebook everyone shills, and that seemingly went nowhere. It'd definitely be neat to see someone learn a language during their corpo time at least, seems wholesome. Nagao Kei seems pretty invested in EN, so maybe he'd at least try to go for it, who knows.

As for Mori, honestly couldn't really care less about the whole debate about her tracks. Some of them definitely have some awkward lines, whether due to the Japanglish or not, but the bop's usually good.
this is what I don't get, she's been living in japan for how long now? that's the absolute best fucking scenario to improve your language - you see and hear it constantly, and if you want to talk in japanese there are literally people everywhere. I'd say you have to go out of your way not to improve just by assimilation. it's also why learning a language from the outside is such a fucking chore, you have to set aside time for the lessons, and then what? you still need learn and train on top of that, which takes even more time since the options are far more limited, which it turn feels like another chore.

and while I'm personally not the biggest fan of rap, I'd assume language skills are even more important there than your average lyrics - another reason to get more proficient. as I said before hololive is big enough to find someone to hang out with, even if it's just wamy to drink each other under the table. I'd say it's laziness, but she seems to be too much of a workaholic for that, so no idea. maybe she doesn't want to look like a 5yo during conversations, but that's the same for everyone trying to speak a secondary language at first, just look at all the JPs.

She has a really good voice for symphonic metal, or dork power metal ala Blind Guardian or Powerwolf. I really wish she'd lean into that, but I guess I have to settle for Gura singing Sabaton forever.
imagine using her singing voice for the holo alt pv of all things and then wait months to release the fucking track

we need a fucking metal holo, or even rock. was hoping the pettan necro would sing scream inyka impulse at some point, but that's out of the question now. and the other holo with a known history in that direction also left (coco said she was a fucking bangyaru, tbh I wasn't surprised).

EDIT: just remembered sora originally wanted to sing opera or something, imagine the goddess going full nightwish... (where's the sweating smiley when you need it)
She wanted people to get to know the person on the inside.
that's pretty clever actually.
also wouldn't that make it vore?

Nene uses light theme. I have been traumatized.

The released version is a retake. You can tell in the original PV version that she was struggling with the higher tone of the song, so she waited a while to practice and improve her singing before releasing a full version.

For example how can Gura or Kiara's lore play into realistically anything that they've put to use compared to (as I exampled) Ame be it her "official lore" or stuff she's become known for? Kiara is a phoenix and gura is a shark from atlantis basically. They don't really have a purpose, lore wise, for existing or doing what they do. Hence why I said it depends on the talent themselves to really sell it at the end of the day. A lot of Niji lore matched the talents perfectly because it fits how their content flow has been going because (again as exampled) Vox's lore fits his personality perfectly and Millie's is just a chaotic nature and if you watch her...it fits perfectly even to the point of being concernfag worthy at times lol. It's why I even mentioned Haato's eventual push into doing lore dumps making it more interesting because for all intents and purposes, she was just a highschool girl with really nothing special about her and ended up giving a method to her madness. So no, there's no bias, it's just if we go with lore being good/bad/useful/worthless and its use with the chubba, there are some legit worthless lore that you can't really play into no matter how good you are at RP. Gura's TTRPG character has more going for her than "gura" does.

You're a little too focused on their debut lore and overlooking the lore they've played into over the course of their streaming careers so far. Kiara's KFP schtick may seem blasé and unimpressive but how she uses it to interact with her chat has enabled her to have a loyal, captive audience to the point that she's the second most superchatted EN next to Mori.

Just because her gimmick isn't working for/on us doesn't mean it's not working. It means we're just not her audience. The bitch has made over $1 million in SC earnings to this point and even though I myself often find her annoying, that shit's fucking impressive given the fact that she's had far more vocal antis and naysayers over the course of her Holo streaming career:

Screenshot 2022-05-24 at 12-00-43 HoloEN1 (Myth).png

Creative lore usage is nice and leads to fun streaming scenarios and it won't be the same for everyone. Sometimes something as simple as "Atlantean shark girl who likes memes, bathtub pizza and sings really nice" is enough. Some chuubas need creative lore to capture an audience and keep them on the hook while they work out what may initially be lacking in their streaming personas. Sometimes the basic premise is just enough.
