President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

To go with what Lord Imperator is saying, even though he's stuck on repeat and can't come up with a new way of phrasing things...

Russia cannot, no matter how destitute the average Russian becomes, no matter how many rubles are sucked out of his pocket to go to the military, cannot sustain this war longer than Ukraine, backed by the economic and industrial might of the west. Ukraine has zero incentive to not take out every loan it can from the West, since if they lose its moot, and if they win there will almost assuredly be some sort of Marshall Plan 2.0 to get NATO's newest member back on track. And join NATO they will, should the war be resolved in a way that leaves them free from Moscow's dominion, either de facto or de jure.

I've run into a few Russians online since shit kicked off. They're incredibly pissed about seeing whatever future their country might have had pissed away down the shitter by Putin's ambitions. Not everyone in Russia is a braindead vatnik (whatever the fuck that term means).
Vatnik is a pejorative for a Russian nationalist and/or USSR apologist. I have a Russian buddy that is pretty depressed over the whole ordeal. His whole livelihood was selling zentico and other gun parts to the west and now he has to shut down. He can't even get the money for the last order I put in as paypal won't let him access his account but he sent me my last order anyway. I really do hope more rational Russians end up in power in my lifetime.

Thanks for explaining that term to me. I figured that's what it was, but always pays to double-check.

Vatnik is the dude with USSR nostalgia who accepts his role as a pawn in the hands of something bigger, eats all the slop he's fed and is a good russian citizen.

Gopnik is essentially a slav squatting, vodka fueled bully demanding protection money from every random who passes by with dreams of becoming a member of the ruling gang.

Russia never had any future because anyone who wasn't one of the afromentioned is either in a prison colony, dead, has emigrated or is playing the "I'll just try to get by" game praying that his ass won't be on the list of next wave of cannon fodder.

All things considered, russia had nearly the same amount of time to become a real power that china had, but they also had all the resources in the world they didn't have to import on top of that, they squandered it all, became a global gas station and fuck all beyond that, now they're coping, threatening everyone because they have fuck all left but being a bitch state to eastern asia.
Russia had even more potential with grain, oil (altho it's mostly a heavier form which is uneconomic when oil prices fall, which happened in the 80s dooming the USSR), fertiliser, titanium and no end of resources in the Far East (altho oil is found in Tatarstan and Chechnya etc. too). Mainland China has to import its food and energy yet it has prospered not Russia. Instead there are generals in palaces built with stolen funds, bureaucrats turned oligarchs who exploited access to the trade ruble commanding a miserable army who rob potatoes and cheap white goods slowly trying to conquer a bit of Donbas and and a deeply miserable populace.

One thing they haven't conveyed is that the word itself refers to the piece of clothing you can see in them gulag photos, jacket of sorts. You can see Russian inmates still wearing them today.

Vatnik or gopnik? Because I thought the official uniform of all gopniks was an Adidas track suit.

Again, all these news sources are reporting MULTIPLE T-90M casualties, so it's obvious you didn't read them at all.
There is zero evidence for that, just shitty reporting where they intentionally mix up claims and evidence of T-90Ms and T-90As being destroyed. There is no evidence for more than one being destroyed. There is little evidence of them being fielded at all.
They aren't all referring to a single tank that has been destroyed, but rather, reports of multiple T-90M tanks that have been destroyed. This whole idea that Russia is holding back its best has been disproven:
Or it's the more obvious option. Russia actually doesn't field as much high-end gear as it says it does and instead heavily relies on older modernized weapons. The new built stuff being mostly tech demonstrators for export sales. Not actually fielded by their army. Why would you use a showroom model on the front anyways? Especially when using it could demonstrate how shitty it actually is.

Vatnik. Vatinik is a warm jacket stuffed with cotton as insulation.
To quell all confusion: gopnik is a pejorative term, usually meaning "petty criminal" but in the last 20 years it began to mean "chav" basically.
vatnik is a pejorative term for a jingoist, subservient Russian, who has given his life to the state and will rabidly defend said state while having basically his "vatnik" and nothing else.

Fresh combat footage drop. People may give the guy in the last guy shit for sticking around on top of a burning powder keg, but I'm sure he's in shock or dazed.

  • Agree
Reactions: Pocket Dragoon
gopnik = pejorative for underclass youth and petty street criminals, commonly stereotyped as doing the slav squat and wearing adidas tracksuits
gopniks.jpg
vatnik = pejorative for enthusiastic supporters of aggressive foreign policy, often fueled by soviet nostalgia

There's a reason why the initial push was directed at Kiev, rather than just at securing the "republics" in the east. Putin considers Ukraine's entire existence as an independent state to be "anti-russian" IE "nazi". The current attempt at creating a land bridge is a fallback position, designed to encircle and isolate Ukraine in order to finlandise it, with the long term goal of cultural suppression and absorption into Russia. He clearly, originally wanted to decapitate the government and install a puppet for the same purpose.

Absorption of more "clay" really means increase in manufacturing capacity and increase in armed forces.

If you look at Russian colonies, they all have been stripped bare of all resources, except PNR (not a whole lot to give, but also it's an important location for future plans) DNR-LNR have been stripped of all industry, factories shipped out to Russia. Population vise, forced conscription of any warm bodies is sending 50-60y.o. college profs at gun point to the front lines. Crimea is not that far off. Other parts are more lucky, but my point is, you don't see a whole lot of Moscow men fighting this war.

Addition of Ukraine by Crimean scenario (largely peaceful), would add hundreds of thousands ready to fight force + a whole shitload of manufacturing capacity, ports etc. With all the NATO bravado and touch rhetoric, even despite getting more unified and growing balls, you are still against a lot of countries in EU who are not willing to resist Russia's expansion. Even with huge advantage in tech, Russia still has huge stockpiles of conventional weapons and bombs from WWII that mostly works and are ready to cause grief. Just like in the Finn winter war, Russia doesn't care about losses, just gains. If they had Ukraine, Putin would not give a shit about completely burning all Uki population to get Baltics or Poland. Please don't scream "muh article 5" because we've seen how old EU (France, Germany) is placating Putin at all cost.

It says something when the French have provided more useful aid (2 arty batteries with fire control linked into Ukrainian systems and MILAN and hand held AT) than the Germans

Russian elites have 100% everything to loose, because none of it is in Russia.

Low born regular Russians may not have much to loose (except their outdoor shitters), but in fact Putin and pretty much anyone of importance there, lives/has real estate outside of Russia, have families outside of Russia. Most Duma members have foreign citizenships.

Sure, shit is bad right now and a lot of people got sanctioned, but it will pass eventually, so there will be ways to recover fortunes.

Russia is not in the corner, Ukraine is. RF troops aren't the same "polite men" they have been in Crimea. Surrendering means loosing territory, any claims to compensation, hundreds of thousands of displaced people, perma-fucked economy. Under Russian occupation it's total looting, rape and murder. Ukrainians haven't got much choice, they are in the corner, not Putin and not Russia.
If true, this makes me feel a lot better about the situation. This makes me think the path forward towards peace would be for Ukraine to use the influx of US technology to destroy the remaining Russian artillery as quickly as possible, so the war becomes unsustainable for Putin, to force him to the negotiating table to sue for peace.

I just want the killing to stop. I'm for anything that gets that done as quickly as possible, without risking nuclear war.

Ruzzians hardly have any reservations when it comes to dehumanizing rhetoric toward their perceived enemies.
I'm not "We must be better than them" sort of guy, you invade someone's home, you forfeit your life. End of story.

I know this is article thread, but some of these phone intercepts are better info than chairborne commando writing articles in an office.

This Russian dude, blue collar, probably at least 30+, sounds like signed contract to experience war, probably somewhere in supply near artillery, probably in an active zone with a lot of DNT/LNR conscripts being unhappy to be there as well. He also seems on funeral detail a lot.

Wifey: How are you yourself doing?

In a nutshell, trust me, I am fucked up, what a nightmare, I saw so many dead bodies it’s fucked. Torn dead bodies, torn up, I say, my mental state is completely blyat’ now, I don’t even know, how to explain all this, it’s just fucked. This is my first and last war.

It’s like WWII, you know: front lines, shelling, trenches. I sleep in a trench, at night it’s shelling, before seven I need to take a shit, because later I won’t be able to.

Wifey: Norm, you are shitting by the clock?

Yes, we are shitting by the clock.

They pay us in dollars, dollar is falling, if you didn’t know

Wifey: I know, I’m on it

And these sons of bitches, and they pay us in dollars, dollar falls, you sons of bitches, what a fucking scam. Basically fucked.

Wifey: Even foreigners have to pay in rubles

And we are paid in dollars …

Basically, this is more like artillery duel, just like that. I felt that shit on my ass. A shell arrives, I’ve pissed myself in fear, I shit myself. We had shitload of shells here, and the shell hits there, imagine, shit started to blow up, fuck … we dive into trenches, fucking dig, dig them two meters deep so shrapnel doesn’t reach us, but is does

Wifey: Many wounded, killed?

Many-many, and a lot of dead and a lot of wounded, many of everything. Infantry pushes and many dead, many dead.

Wifey: In infantry?

Yes, infantry, I saw too much, carried too many, fuck that cunt, I don’t even want to talk about it.

I am so tired of this shit, it’s madness, here is madness. Never in my life I thought I would be in such a shit.

Wifey: Remember, how much you wanted to be in shit, remember?

I regret it now.

On the tenth, paycheck will come, again they will fuck us, as usual, they fucking promised 10k/day combat pay. And then they fucked us, bitches, fucking faggots blyat’, there is almost mutiny, real mutiny and 80% don’t even fight, fuck them, just like that blyat’.

We too don’t fight, the fuck do I need this shit, the fuck I need this chump change, I say, I get more money in construction, why should I fight? I fucked all of you on my dick, no way I go die like this. Every day it’s some fucking bullshit, bombs blyat’ – this is fucked, planes, helis, it’s fucked what’s going on.

All, all this daily grind – it’s weak sauce it turns out

This is blyat’ little shit, and the most important it turns out, I don’t know, it’s just life, happiness of our children and you and I.

I’ve lost many friends, Tanya. 15th brigade, Samara, were fucked into shit, from 2k left 400.

Wifey: That’s fucked.

30th was fucked so bad, blyat’, not a whole lot living left, fuck.

21st brigade - went to total shit, fuck, only corpses, corpses – corpses torn to fucking shit, I saw shit so fucked, it’s scary, scary. Young kids, I am grown man I’m loosing my mind from this, I can’t bear this shit, fuck, I cry, I bawl every time. Put together bags, fucking people, hands, feet, everything.

I don’t want to live like this, my contract is over, I’m coming back, I’ll be back, I just resign and leave. People just die, just like that. Everyone is an enemy, there is nothing like LNR, DNR are for Russia, no fucking way, everyone is an enemy.

Wifey: Yes?

Yes, everyone.
