Studios go out of their way to work with difficult people if there are profits to be had and a good movie to be made. Actors as well. Lawrence Olivier wanted to drag himself out of his deathbed to play the part that went to Maximillian Schell in The Freshman when he heard they somehow managed to score Brando, and he's the reason they got Matthew Broderick, who was impossible to get after Wargames anf Ferris Beuller's Day Off. Brando wasn't happy about the filming schedule and blackmailed the studio for an extra million, which was a lot at the time, an extra 33% over his $3million contract, and he scored like a third of the film's total budget.

But the film was pretty profitable, Brando got to pretty much reprise Don Corleone in a comedy role, and everyone won in the end because none of the problems with Brando showed through.

Fatty Arbuckle was accused of things that at this point are almost certainly untrue and we're eventually accepted as untrue back in the day and he was still toxic to audiences, and he was as big as Marlon Brando at his peak. His career never recovered because there was no market for him.
