Weightlifting for Kiwis - Discussion and support regarding the art of swole

Be warned that you are probably describing yourself as the dream woman of the average poster in this thread. Very dangerous.
Not surprisingly, I've just gotten fitness tips. I find that kiwifarms is one of the few places with men where you don't get hit on or weird messages if mentioning your description is actually relevant.
Inb4 I'm gonna get a ton on my profile now
Hell, if you can afford it get one of those massage tools that's basically foam rolling on steroids, Amazon has them for about 150 bucks.
Are you talking about those vibrating foam rollers? I actually got one for like $20 at Aldi's a few years ago.

I feel that the bodybuilding industry is one of the worst possible things that ever happened to weightlifting and makes things way harder to understand than what it should. You either have to find the right people, publications, or go out of your way to get explicit coaching to learn how to build and program progressive overload in a safe and constructive manner.

It isn't flashy or designed to sell magazines and that is entirely the problem. Everyone thinks they are an expert but few actually are, and they bloat the entire landscape of lifting and fitness with roided out freaks that will die when they are 40 from massive heart attacks or will be crippled for life from bad form and stupidity. Arnold's books are a joke and teach nothing that a beginner can use without a massive amount of context.
You also just aren't allowed to have fun anymore, you have to have exactly this much rest and these many reps in reserve with exactly this mesocycle or YOUR WORKOUT IS FUCKING RUINED!

They're talking about massage guns.

Now I am sad. Arnie, I have failed you.

I wish I could smack 16 year old Hot Dog (for a lot of reasons but) primarily for not getting the right resources and wasting years of time wondering what proper lifting was and how to find resources.

Props where it’s due, Pumping Iron is one of the best prices of pro-lifter propaganda ever made.
His encyclopedia is worth reading, not for his top secret routines but it does a fantastic job of explaining the ideals, goals, and techniques used to sculpt the body. He just conveniently forgot to bring up that his Dbol and Primo script may have something to do with even his ability to make it through two workouts a day precontest.

Speak for yourself, friendo. Not everyone on here is gay or a coombrain, that says more about yourself, than about everyone else.

I mean, it happened to everyone. Rich said it himself, he started with shit advice, taking shit PEDs at first, with zero knowledge.

It kinda happened to me in a way, I was always interested in bodybuilding but I was given pretty crappy advice, and as much as I tried, I got bored pretty quickly. So basically I barely lifted anything during my 20s. In my 30s I regained interest in it, but mostly focused on strongman-kinda bodybuilding and here I am now.

I’m pretty lucky to have had a very basic background in exercise, but for a while I looked over shit that is super obvious to me now, especially as far as lifting to achieve a certain body is concerned.
Rich is a tragic tale, and even he knew it, but in my mind Zyzz is even more tragic. I’ve never seen anyone say that they want to be the next Rich, but there are thousands of young guys who unironically want to be Zyzz, when Zyzz is just as much a cautionary tale as Rich.

Yea, Zyzz definitely has had a much larger impact on bodybuilding and fitness culture. There's a pretty cool mini-documentary about Zyzz that I've found really interesting:

We're all gonna make it bros

I am not exaggerating, Zyzz singlehandedly changed the entire fitness industry into what it is today.
Gymshark, people trying to ape the look of Zyzz.
Social media bodybuilders, Zyzz was one of the first to make it big by selling supps and clothes with his brand on it.
His openness about his drug abuse, him and Rich really were some of the first next to Ward to be honest about what they took.
And he was an inspiration, mainly because he was very relatable as just some awkward nerd who liked hardstyle.

Pumping Iron and Arnie book

Agreed that Pumping Iron is great propaganda and the encyclopedia is excellent if you are into the science of sculpting a body but I never could crack how to apply any of his routines for progressive overload or what he meant half the time.

I never had consistent access to an actual gym until I was around 17 and was stuck with a bunch of dumb football teenagers who didn't know shit, myself included, so I dropped it. A buddy introduced me to Starting Strength in my late 20s due to my build (naturally big legs) and everything I really wanted to know was finally there. I didn't have time to start seriously until now in my early 30s but was stuck on my buddy's routine, until now.

At least I never went full retard ego lifting or fucked myself up permanently being a fucktard.

I swear, one day I will club a zoomer in the gym.
My physique and strength really started to go from "gym bro" to "this nigga lifts" when I discovered John Meadows' teachings, mainly about exercise sequencing and the little muscles that get neglected all the time. Having just a few compounds I worry about overloading and other exercises to pump up or stretch and all that struck a good balance for me, as I really enjoy going hard and experimenting in the gym.
What I learned from Arnold's book that I still use is his insistence that pullovers be in almost every routine, because they are the shit, and agonist-antagonist supersets to get a deep burn going.

@1440p Curved Monitor these things.

My friend has the theragun which is super pricey but is a lot better than the $50 one I bought. Mine doesn't get the same response in my muscles as the theragun but it's better than nothing.

Hello again swole friends :)

Couple of questions before I hit my session today.

Is there any reason to add weight to my pull ups (wide, pronated grip) - I really can't get a full rep of this done with weights and maybe get one or two with out before my form starts to suffer.

I have added more weight to a few exercises where my strength there was really questionable (namely landmine press) and the reps themselves were pretty shit but the next week I came back and dropped the weight and found that my strength had improved immensely.

Also, is there actually anything wrong with gymshark? I see hate for it a lot. I started buying their leggings because they are much cheaper yet more durable and higher quality than any other sports wear I have ever owned. Or is it just hate towards people who come kitted out fully in their stuff?

I personally ascribe to the idea that pullups are best unweighted, with strict focus on form, squeezing and stretching the lats at the top and bottom of the movement respectively.
And the reason Gymshark gets hate is because they have a rampant history of teenagers like David Laid and others claiming natural while obviously being on PEDs, plus just general TikTok generation levels of marketing. They were also doing some dumbass “body positive” ads, only for the women unsurprisingly, extremely tonedeaf and forgetting that their entire brand is built off of SARMS Goblin Zoomers.

Thank you!

I'm pretty well set with my supinated/close grip form but wide/pronated is absolutely fucked and I can definitely feel my left side letting me down. Long term goal is to fix that up, my back muscles are coming in quite nicely, unfortunately I am not feeling the strength increase. :(

ETA: Wondering if hitting shoulders then back the next day and also not enough sleep (4-5 hours) is a big part of my problem. Not super good at scheduling my days currently.

For symmetry on the back, one arm dumbbell rows are great, and lat-pulldowns can help you get better at pullups because you load it differently.
Shoulders before back usually isn’t an issue, because even the rear delt supports the back more than actually moves everything.

I'm glad to hear it, and I agree. Kiwis are nice, which is funny when you consider we're considered the villains of the internet

This is an age thing, least for me, I need to hit my work outs same time, even if I'm lower on sleep that sadly still happens a lot. Try to focus on getting work outs in, even if youre dragging ass you won't have 100% and just accept that, don't get mad, don't beat yourself up, just go do what you got in you.

If I have perfect sleep and early meeting or something and hit my work out late I'm worse off than less sleep. Again this is just myself and only started about 2 years ago.

I think it comes from two major things, one we all share a sense of humor that has a lot of darkness and shock value, so we have something even if strange to bond on and second, we all do what we can to not be ourselves online, this isn't FB where the avg person is trying to impress someone they got bullied by in 4th grade, or make mommy send likes.

I want to see people do well and that makes me a raging faggot.
