Articles & Happenings is the third attempt at a news board on the Kiwi Farms. It is a cursed place. Every moderator who has been assigned here has resigned within a year. During 2016, the political crossfire was so bad it spread to different boards and culminated in me banning American news discussion entirely for several months. It has been deleted in its entirety twice. There is no actual discussion here, it's people posting garbage. It leans much further right than the rest of the site and doesn't particularly conduct discussion because dissenting opinions are dogpiled by a thousand memelords posting shit they read on /pol/ without any critical analysis.

The only rules that can be enforced are empirical ones with boolean violation answers. New threads must cite a real source directly and must use the headline of the article as a thread title without any editorializing. Articles must be archived in some way and must link to the original article. Replies that are one word or a reaction images are automatic one-month bans from the board.

I'm creating this now because it seems like this place is here to stay and is one of the largest areas of the entire site. I might as well throw in bare minimum effort to improve it. I don't even try to find mods for here because they will quit, without exception. I've added new prefixes ("Business" and "Crime") just now.

Slight unpopular opinion on my end, but if Null did get rid of A&N right now, I would not be opposed to looking at the Ethan “Gunt” Ralph threads. I’ve been lurking/occasionally posting on there for over a year now, and I’m much informed about what gets posted there than on A&N.

Though, the one downside of A&N being gone is the amount of diverse news articles being lost forever due to CatParty’s resilience.

I feel like A&H is being the scapegoat for a much wider "problem" (tho I say its a natural transition given the world we live in).

The world around us has changed and, like it or not, this site became a bastion of freedom of speech and we live in such fucked times where free speech is automatically associated with hate speech.

Yeah, this site started off making fun of a weird idiot online but it has grown into something much more bigger than that. Its a satirical site but it is through satire that we can discuss actual IRL issues (again, Null may hate the political shit but its was kind of inevitable) and a lot of people dont like that we can do that.

So removing A&H wouldnt change dick, because it isnt A&H that is the problem but the world around us.

This is the mentality of either a California resident or someone who lives way too much online and doesn’t interact with enough people.

It's easy to assume a progressive menace is washing over the land when clickbait Kotaku articles create notroversies and the Guardian is allowing people to write shitty opinion pieces about how very oppressed they are. The truth of the matter is that news and journalism has swung left for decades and will, of course, always be politically inventivized to report that way. It says nothing of what the common man thinks and most people tend to be center-left or center-right, way less radical than online outlets will have you believe.

I can still use retard out in public and nobody will bat an eye. While dumbfucks online will be horrified the fact of the matter is that they have very little sway over everyday offline discourse. I'm not saying social media sites don't have a massive problem with policing, they very much do, this issue though is largely fought on the battlegrounds of the interwebs.

Kiwifarms is not the end-all-be-all of freedom of speech.

tbh A&H seems pretty well-behaved from what I've seen
occasionally somebody will be contrarian for the sake of contrary but other than the sporadic dumb spergy slapfight to move to pastadome is there some amazingly horrible shit that I just miss because the jannies hit it too fast for me to see it?

I'm wondering if a paywall is a decent solution tbh
Just forces people to have a little bit of skin in the game but may alienate a lot of posters so not great.

It is well behaved... it's just it has "bad" opinions, and people want it off the site cause of that.

Jace and some of the other terminally onlines support 24/7 groupstalking better but yeah a lot aren't really as active as they could be
I still keep up with a few cow threads, Wogglebuglover probably the most active, pixiteri, ugojessie, Kirtander, Clawshrimpy are some honorable mentions. but yeah either they're slow or it's some "whoops took a piss, better tell the internet" "OH SHIT HE PISSED LOLOLOLOL PISSSSSSS" and it's exhausting to pay attention to for the signal/noise ratio

I def agree that as horrifying as the prospect is, these parts are one of the better sources for insight into world events. The ability to point-by-point take down a post without getting a ban for feefees or to just go "lol you said anal" does a lot to keep things honest.
Also I blame the idea that it isn't that the farms are some miracle brain trust, just that the world has become more stupid and more online and so the ancient creeds of "provide sources, archive fucking everything, and call people dumbshits when they can't" ends up a lot better than alternatives
