Maybe if there was some blended solution. The Biden mega thread does a good job of generating active conversation and is a place a lot of people can talk without it becoming overly radioactive, but that still required pruning because at a certain size it was breaking the site.
Megathreads couldn't be the only option available or they'd get flooded at an ungodly fuckin pace and would just result in a backlog of 5k page megathread time bombs for the site.

Maybe have a few megathreads for consistent hot button issues like the groomer epidemic etc, which are regularly curated. If a specific post is exceptionally crucial or contributory to the thread and received enough positive reaction it can be saved but cull the bulk of the "lol yep" tier posts.
