The Boys - An Amazon Prime adaptation of the Ennis comic series

The way I see it, Season 1 had a lot going for it to make people excited for Season 2:
  • The Boys narrowly escape from Vought and all become public enemy #1.
  • Hughie's sworn enemy, A-Train, goes into a comma while fighting against Starlight.
  • Super terrorists are suddenly popping up around the world and are being deemed as a legitimate threat.
  • Homelander unexpectedly kills Madelyn Stillwell. No longer able to use her as a hostage, Butcher tries to blow Homelander and himself up, only to awaken and find his wife alive, but also having raised Homelander's bastard child (who happens to have his own powers).
That last point was especially pivotal for setting up the next season. Sadly, most of these points were poorly followed up with in the second season, as they were either immediately resolved or barely explored further. Whereas Season 1 ended on a literal bang, Season 2 ended on a wet fart:
  • After defeating Stormfront, The Boys are no longer classified as wanted criminals. They all get to go back to their families and/or return to a bit of normalcy.
  • Homelander's being blackmailed by Maeve to not be a ruthless psychopath for once.
  • The AoC head-popping lady is the new threat that may become Hughie's new boss, though as an antagonist, she has big shoes to fill.
  • Claire (the initial red herring) is still roaming around the US after having escaped the facility, and will likely act as the new season's wild card.
  • The Deep's still not allowed back in the Seven.
If I have the time and enough interest, I'll give the new season a chance. But it really is a shame considering how badly they dropped the ball.
I remember liking the comic back in the day as it was posted all over the place and I found it fun. I never got into the show series and I'm happy I didn't, because I doubt they'd ever do some of the more interesting shit. One big thing I remember from the comic was Butcher always called people "poofs" which is Brit-bong for fag and at one point they avenge some gay super hero who was killed, to which Hughie asks why he did it when he's such a gay basher, and Butcher just responds he doesn't give a shit about gays one way or the other, he just likes saying fag. I just can't imagine them doing something like that in a television show these days.

Just started watching this show. Real surprised they let them kill a black girl in the first episode like that and make the only other black character out to be such a scumbag. Looks like it’s heavily focused on white actors.. is this 2022? I was expecting this to have a bunch of woke shit in it but honestly I’m not seeing it yet. This is fun. Not great but fun

in the comics, both black characters, were white. you just didn't notice the woke.

The gore gag at the beginning was fucking epic.

Very good first episode. I like where this is going and there is some amazing gore later on. Holy fuck, could this be course correcting after the reception to season 2?

Ive finished the first three episodes and....wow. I enjoyed season two, but i feel like it missed a bit of that gorefest that season 1 had. Boy have they went back to the roots in season 3. I wont spoil for anyone, but holy shit am i excited to see where tf this season leads.

That being said, for those who think there isnt woke shit going on in this show, id like to hear your guys take on a few scenes. They are obviously trying to stay neutral to the shows theme, being that "ALL humans are shitty", i just cant help but wonder if a few scenes were ironic satire or unironic woke-ology. For those of you that know what im talking about, the scene with starlight talking about women being able to climb the corporate ladder, scene with black noir being told why he has to wear a mask, and the scene where "straight white male" is literally being radicalized by homelander on tv-- while his new black girlfriend is in the background. Overall, i didn't find it to be a huge deal either way, but rather it was one of those "hmm" moments, and i moved on. From the thanos/ant man reference, to that absolute mindfuck of an alley scene... I literally cant get the fucking images out of my head. Cant wait for next week.

Maybe I’m crazy but is anyone’s favorite character Hughie? I don’t know what it is about him but I just really love the trajectory of his story arc so far despite the way he is and I honestly don’t know why. I’m genuinely excited to see more of this.

As well of course my other two favorite characters are Butcher and Homelander.
Homelander is a somewhat sympathetic if not at times strange villain and I think that his story of yearning for connection with someone like himself and the need for validation he never got as a child really plays in to his relatability for some people in spite of all the horrific things he’s done. Obviously he’s by no means a good man but he’s a very interesting character.

And In Butcher’s case I’m always a bit of a sucker for the man self destructively obsessed story so that’s a no brainer.

I’m really enjoying the show. A bit too much gay shit for my taste but I’m willing to let it slide.

Jesus all the stuff about niggers is annoying as fuck.

The russia stuff might be interesting given the current climate.

I'll keep watching cause I really want to see Homelander lose his shit, that's gonna be fun.

Should I rewatch the first two seasons, even though my memory of it is still good, or read the comics? Got nothing I'm reading or watching right now :(

The comics are completely different and are way worse than the show. I read the comics up until issue 20.

I just realised this, but the nazi storyline is really fitting for a superhero flick, given the reich's use of the Nietzschean 'ubermensch' and the term's relation with early superheros like Superman.

Just caught the first episode of season 3. Why the fuck did they turn Hughie in Kessler? Why can Amazon not just do a real adaptation? 1654489888480.png
Also, good job on babby's first visual metaphor with the whistling kettle, Philip Sgriccia, you fucking hack.

Just watched the first episode of Season 3. Enjoyed it.

All I heard about the show in the run up was how this season was going to explore toxic masculinity and how America isn't a very good country but I didn't really get any of that here.

The show still seems to hate both the left and right equally which I approve of.

No, there is definitely woke shit. Black Noir in the comics was a clone of Homelander and was made as a fail safe in case Homelander went rogue iirc. He's now way less interesting. The Starlight thing was dumb. But the show was good despite the woke they added and it wasn't so in your face to completely ruin the episodes.

Overall I liked the first three episodes and I'm excited to see the rest of the season.
