I stopped playing when the tribal goons started doing blood sacrifice to a fucking tree for some reason.

Also I suspect that my assessment of what was going on that I made an hour into the game is 100% spot on.

The natives have some sort of deal with an evil thing that either is the island or lives in it and that's where the disease comes from, and if they sacrifice enough it will kick off the invaders for them again.
