Not quite the same as other suggestions from this thread, but I really enjoyed Pachinko by Min Jin Lee.
It's a beautifully written novel following four generations of a family of poor Korean immigrants living in Japan and the things they do to survive. It starts out in the early 1900s in rural Korea and ends in the 80s-90s in the big city in Japan. The characters are well written, and the story weaves between heartwarming and heartbreaking (usually both at once). Not as horrifying as this thread, but it's a great story of what people do to survive and how generational trauma affects a family.
