The smartest thing to do right now with a limited amount of money is stock up on food that'll last several years (properly stored grains, canned meat). There won't be food shortages that lead to outright starvation but there will definitely be price inflation and sporadic availability of many things. If I had the means I'd have 10 years of food.

Hey, I barter with ammo and liquor all the time. Traded a neighbor two boxes of 16 gauge for a case of beer just the other day. Traded some .223 for gasoline last week too. Sometimes it just helps cut out the middle man.

As for gardening books, agriculture was developed over thousands of years through trial and error. If you want to plant a survival garden or something, last thing you want is to figure out what works and what doesn't through trial and error, just refer to someone else's prior knowledge and you'll be fine.

I'm happily shoveling money into the US total stock market (and a bit into EAFE). Am I seeing success? If I look at the last year, no. If I look at the last ten years, I'm getting about what I expected. Success all depends on what your plan is, how much you need and when you need it.
