Between their speed and a better strategy team they're right where they want to be. I'm a huge Max fan but I love seeing Checo compete too. May the best driver win!

Agreed! If we can have 3 drivers fighting for the win its great, if Carlos can close up that will make really great!

And nice avatar too man! I remember watching him when he set the speed record in late 80s at Daytona. His son definitely doing well and got his dad's genes!

The Coors car was such a classic look too. A lot of great drivers from that era but there was something so cool about someone putting it in the 210s; I don't watch too much modern NASCAR but I do like Chase a lot.

Last season was pretty intense with its battle between Verstappen and Larbleton, I thought it couldn't get any better, now we might get a season with a three or even 4 way struggle between two teams. Pretty neat.

Yeah, I used to be mad fan of Nascar in 80s and even into the 90s. It was my favorite series for a long time before JV came along in IndyCar and then F1. Nascar became 3rd after that and like you, I haven't watched it at all other than the 500 and the odd other race since before JG retired. They are at Sonoma this weekend I see so I am going to watch that as the road courses at least involes more than turning left. LOL

But yeah, I read a book when I was about 7 in mid-70s called The King. You know who it was about. That is what started me into motorracing, and specifically NASCAR. I remember the brawl at the end of the 500 between Allison and ?Yarborough wasn't it? Petty's huge barrell-roll along the fence, Waltrip doing the Iggy shuffle etc. Classic era of racing that was until the new breed with JG started and everything changed. I heard they do some kind of segment system and playoff for title and I knew I was totally done with it, other than the 500 and road courses.

Yes, totally agree. I just hope there aren't any team orders BS. But from all accounts when hearing Max talk, he seems level-headed unlike Jos and if Perez does start finishing ahead he ain't going to go ape-shit. I could be wrong of course, but now that he has a WDC, that kind of helps that possibility in that regard.

There are a few drivers who, for their personality and hard luck and not having gotten into a team that could bring them the WDC, it would be a feel good story for them to win the title. Checo is pretty much at top of list. Ric I feel similar about. Long serving drivers who would only enhance F1s image if they won the WDC, without any BS or controversy that might serve to tarnish it.

This could become quite an interesting topic of discussion as time progresses. Personally, if there is a cap, it should be $50 million, at least. If a fucking guy playing baseball can make that amount for playing, a game that children can partake in safely, then a racing driver should earn same, if not more, given their lives are a bit more at risk, wouldn't you agree? Boxer I have same kind of feels for. They earn their money and should be paid well considering the high chance of serious injury, or even death, they also face. Tennis and Golf are the ones that get me though. LOL You should get paid an amount in accordance with the risks you are taking.

WOLFF: F1 MUST LIMIT DRIVER SALARIES, $30M ‘INADEQUATE’​

Mercedes Formula 1 boss Toto Wolff believes it is untenable for a cost-capped F1 not to have a driver salary limit – and hints it would need to be even lower that what had been mooted in the original proposal.

An initial proposal of a $30million driver salary limit came about back in 2020 as F1 brainstormed ways of cost-saving in addition to its new overall cost cap – which excludes driver salaries, as well as those of the top three earners in the team.

Talk of the the aforementioned limit went quiet for a long period but has now re-entered the public agenda – and pretty much every driver asked about it in Baku voiced their ardent opposition, citing that F1 is currently growing in popularity and that capped salaries in F1 could create a knock-on effect of junior drivers struggling to find sponsorship due to limits on backers’ longer-term return on investment.

Speaking on Saturday in Baku, however, Wolff indicated that even the proposed driver salary limit numbers were too far out of proportion with the current cost cap, which for 2022 stands at $141million.

“Certainly it has come up as a controversial topic, we can see that we’re facing a very difficult situation in Formula 1 overall, the sport is booming and Formula 1 is earning more money and that is trickling down to the teams, but we have a cost cap,” Wolff said.

“We have $140million for 1000 people, with inflation, we haven’t even been able to pay the inflation. And I think the talk about [even a] $30-40million salary allowance is inadequate when you take that perspective.

“Now clearly drivers will have an opinion on that, and maybe as a driver, I’d say the same thing. But the US leagues that are the most successful in the world have introduced salary caps 15 years ago, it works pretty well over there.”

Haas team principal Guenther Steiner echoed Wolff’s suggestion that F1 should “learn lessons from these American big-league sports” on how to limit the stars’ salaries.

Of those US championships, the National Football League and the National Hockey League have hard salary caps, while the National Basketball Association allows cap breaches in certain circumstances. Major League Baseball has no salary cap but rather a luxury tax, in which teams are forced to contribute extra money if their payroll exceeds a certain threshold.

The cap figure in US leagues results from collective bargaining between a players’ union and the league/teams. And that collective bargaining also yields a mandated minimum salary, and sometimes an overall salary floor for a team.

“Formula 1 is looking at it without an immediate solution to it,” Wolff continued. “But I think like all the other sports in the world, we need to find a way of how we can act sustainably and become independent from sovereign funds or state-owned teams.

“Therefore it’s certainly clear it’s going to be one of the main areas because you can’t simply have a [driver] salary bill in some of the top teams that is $30/40/50million when the rest of the team has to be divided by $140million.

“Having said that, they [the drivers] are tremendous superstars, they deserve to be among the top earners in the sport in terms of direct salaries. They already are.

“And then we need to find a way of unlocking the endorsement, the capability of doing endorsement deals, which is two-thirds, if not more, [of sportspeople earnings] for US American sport teams – but direct salaries, Formula 1 drivers are paid the most.”

The proposal that gained traction within F1 is that of a driver salary allowance rather than a cap – which would mean that a team could pay their drivers above the allowance as long as the excess funds came out of the team cost cap figure.

Wolff also made clear that he wanted to see the top three non-driver earners’ within the team – currently not incorporated in the cost cap – have their salaries limited.

Ferrari’s Mattia Binotto, who was widely in agreement with Wolff’s stance, cautioned that any movement on the driver salary cap wouldn’t be swift – and that it was not an “urgent” matter.

F1 already has many drivers contracted beyond even the upcoming 2023 season, while Red Bull’s Max Verstappen is on a big-money deal through to the end of 2028.
“It’s a tricky one, I’m not sure there’s a solution to be honest,” Binotto said of a driver salary limit.

“It’s not only a tricky one – it’s not an urgent one, and the reason why is that the salary cap for drivers will only affect three or four teams maximum teams, no more than that.
“Those teams that will be affected already have long-term agreements with their drivers. So long that it’s not something that we need to put in place for next year. It will not be before 2026.”

I was properly screaming about this. Mick, for all his faults, had clearly tried to go for a redemption run once he got the radio in, and the entire elimination zone seemed to be trying to fight for Q2 and...

They flipped over to old shaky-head HAM, on an empty field, on a lap where he ended up maintaining his EXACT position. The Merc-bias felt worse than usual to me this week, honestly. Sky's always been like that but... I don't know, it seemed they were desperately clinging to SOMETHING to cope about, especially regarding their 'brilliant strategy.'

Anyway, at least it was a good result from Ferrari, and from Checo. A shame Haas utterly binned it as far as strategy goes, KMag seemed... Upset.

The direction of F1 is really bad, same goes for the info-table on the left of the screen. More often than not, it shows gap to leader, which is ridiculously useless information for anyone past 5th place.

It only ever gives us vaguely important information, when pitstops are due and we need to know where a single driver would end up afterwards. At literally every other point in the race, you need to know if a driver is within DRS-range (something that could be highlighted by some visualization btw). Even when pitstops are due, you can just tally up individual gaps to get a general idea of where a driver would end up.

Yet 80% of the race we get gap to leader. Just a pet peeve, but it makes me wonder if the people working on this stuff actually are into F1.

As a Vettel-Fan I can also say that you simply have no fucking clue what's going on in the midfield during Qualifying. You seldom even know who's on a fast lap and how they are doing. Is it too much to ask for, to have a clock running next to their name on the left when they are on a quick lap, so I know how they are doing?

I'll second that.

I happened to watch that video a week or two ago when it popped up in my recommendations, despite not knowing much about NASCAR. The video was really well done & gave an interesting perspective into NASCAR's history and Dale Earnhardt. Definitely worth a watch.

Yeah right, totally forgot about that. It's like they got Einstein, Freud and Kafka to brainstorm the perfect system to show whatever information is the most redundant. Like the race will be 10 laps old and we'll be informed that all cars are at zero pitstops. Or pitstops will happen, so we get full names but no tyre overview. It seems to be tailor made to switch to whatever is most useless at the moment.

And god have mercy on your poor soul if you think the pundits will have any input
