You have to have a REAL JOB to qualify for those tho - and it took applying for 3 years for him to finally get one.

I only know how it works in Westchester, but there’s a shit ton of other programs outside of section 8 people apply for. Usually the housing lotteries. If you’re working poor in Westchester and stay at it and apply to every one, you can get a place in a fancy ass new building for like $1200-1500/mo. They make them set aside a certain # of income based apts when they build them.

In the city there’s all sorts of other specialized vouchers, but they’re usually for working poor. Or you go to a shitty NYCHA public housing building, but even those have long ass waiting lists.

my uncle is long time junkie in that area and he moved farther north to like Poughkeepsie and knows how to work the system. He basically makes his job working the system. He’s always had some shitty ass govt place to live.
