Losing weight is not impossible, but for most people in the west, it's an uphill battle. Hardly anyone works a kind of job that requires getting up from an office chair more than a few times a day, but you're often stuck at that job for 1/3 of your day (probably half of your waking time). Unless you're cooking for yourself (a skill no longer passed on by parents and rarely taught in home ec classes) and controlling every ingredient, there is something fattening, inflammatory, or downright poisonous entering your diet. There's a ton of conflicting information and what works for one person may not work for another. The hardest part for most people is it requires less time and money and more thought and planning to lose weight. People want an easy solution because thinking hurts.
That said, I've done it, so it can be done. I take an hour each Sunday to prep my meals for the week, so I have breakfast ready immediately on waking up, lunch packed and ready to go, and dinner just needs to be thrown in a pot for heating. I have a gym membership (<$10 monthly, the one thing I'd be happy to pay more for to filter out the riff raff who don't re-rack weights, bang equipment, and talk loudly) and make use of it at least 3x a week. Saturday is kind of a sabbath to eat pizza and drink beer while not doing much more than going for a walk in the park.
