So not only did Supply careen off a cliff, Demand also got fucking skyrocketed due to us changing from an exporter to an importer refusing one of the top supply... chains?

Anyone remember this? Remember after this how the #1 trend on google searches in Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Michigan, and a few other states was "how do I change my vote?"

I get supply and demand, but isn’t the issue that the prices went up like a runaway train after every crucial moment?

Crucial moments affect supply and demand a lot. If that crucial moment causes supply to fall, prices need to rise so that gas stations don't go empty. If it causes other supply costs to rise, same thing.

Think about the PS5 shortage. Because TSMC is physically unable to produce enough chips, Sony cannot make enough PS5s to fill the market demand at the list price point. At a price of $499, they fly off the shelves faster than Sony makes them. Raise the price, and they move slower. Judging by ebay prices, the price at which PS5s would have a stable in-store supply is probably closer to $750. If Sony raised the price to $700, they would book a lot more profit, but you'd also actually find a PS5 the next time you went to Best Buy...assuming you still wanted one for that price.

Same thing happens with oil, except when oil is being drained out of tanks faster than the oil industry can fill them up, really terrible things happen like trucks and farm equipment not being able to get fuel. So either they raise the price, or tanks go empty.
