The one thing that I learned in high school that I have used the most and still do to this day is zeitgeist. Its a German word that translates to "the spirit/ghost of the times" and is defined as the general intellectual, cultural, and ideological climate of an era for a society. Understanding the zeitgeist of a time period is crucial in understanding why people did things or how ideas were perceived because we instinctually look at history through the current cultural lens as it's what we know, but to do so would be grossly incorrect. I recall the word becoming a bit of a meme among my Global History class because any essay question could be answered with zeitgeist if you tried hard enough.
Every single time I see trannies posthumously transing women or saying that two spirit is an example of transgenderism in history, I want to hand them a dictionary open to the definition of zeitgeist.
