While there is a money corruption facet at play here, I think the central problem is the activist class. They basically achieved legal equality for the people whom they were representing years ago. All they had to do is hang up their hats and get a real job, but noooo. They had to continue to justify their (at this point) make-work cushy activist jobs. So they had to constantly find things to push the envelope on, and in doing so started causing blowback on actual gay people. The 'T' was always there in a sort of 'let the retarded kid sit at your lunch table because you feel bad for them' kind of way. Now that they've been made the face of the movement, it's all going down in flames.

Contact hypothesis -the idea that personal connections increased goodwill towards LGB people - worked for gays, bisexuals, and lesbians because most of them can act normal in public and build good will. Because ultimately, the L, the G, and the B are sexual orientations and can be contained to 'the bedroom'. The T isn't. It's a body image problem, and the people afflicted by it refuse to treat the image issue, instead insisting that the whole world play along lest they kill themselves. I think a huge problem is that the modern T is really out of place in societies where gender equality exists, where it just so happens that usually have high tolerance for LGBT. Go back 100-150 years, you can probably justify a "transgender" kind of existence (still no need to change pronouns). It really is/was a kind of lifestyle that involves transgressing strict gender-norms which no longer exist. Maybe in an ultraconservative or traditional village in some mountainside village in China, you could justify it, but in modern Western societies? It's just attention-seeking.
Doesn't help that troons are usually incredibly unintelligent, brainwashed or autistic (usually a combination) and have no sense that being transGENDER means having a reference point for gender and having a proper historical and cultural understanding of what it is to be male or female. And since a lot of them are dumbass teens or 20-somethings, that's a big .
