This seems.. much better? Schools and most other places mass shootings occur tend to be soft targets and they need to be hardened up. I have no problem with that. Certainly much better than making the average citizen a softer target.

Not necessarily. What it does is sets precedent that States cannot infringe on a law abiding citizens Second Amendment right to carry by introducing vague, arbitrary rules like "demonstrating a need" for self defense. I will say it was a clever attempt by the legislature of NY to shaft people applying to carry. How the fuck do you prove something like that? And then it's left up to the discretion of a legislature that has proven itself to be anti-gun.
