Oh yeah, you have to remember that these aren't real people, being a 'content creator' at this point is more demeaning than being a prostitute because you are selling your entire personality and existence to the peanut gallery free of charge and have to constantly adapt and mold your existence around the cancerous society that festers the internet. This essentially makes you subhuman in every way.

The issue is that people change GRADUALLY over time. Ethan and Ian never actually changed, their behavior just became more apparent.
The "people change" excuse is always a pissoff because it is ALWAYS used as an excuse for why someone gave up their values and has no integrity, as if thats somehow "growth".

Depending on how you envision your metaphoric ladders, rope or rigid framed, you'll either hear "roll up" the ladder, or "kick it out" from behind the one who has ascended it previously and is engaging in the attempt. Either is a common phrase and wouldn't be out place very much wherever you see/hear it. Personally, you can set up a kicked down ladder again and climb up without the help of the jerk trying to delay you in the emergency exit scenario the metaphor is describing, but the real piece of shit rolls the ladder up behind them so that it can't be brought back down without too much time elapsing to be any useful means of escape, so I lean toward that version because of the more negative connotations it encapsulates.
